F1 exhaust header Colours?
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, October 23, 2004 8:07 PM
Hey, does anyone know of a good way to get the heat distortion colour on a set of headers on an F1 car?

I've tried painting a couple of different colours but I'm not happy with the results.

Thanks

Alot of the exhausts I've seen on mocern F1 cars don't show alot of colouring. They usually end up a dark chrome colour with a dull sort of shine. If they do show any colouring, they usually show a gold/brown colour with small areas of blue.

Try spraying a chrome paint, and then spraying a few very light coats of a gold/brown colour. Then maybe apply some areas of very thin clear blue over the bends and joins in the pipes. It's better to have the paint a bit too thin, because then you can slowly build the colour up til it looks good to you.

If you don't have an airbrush, you can try drybrushing the colours on. Again, build up the colours slowly for the best results.

Here's a good example of what I mean:

What car are you building? If you need any pics I might be able to help you out.

Hope this helps.

What kit of the F2004 are you building? I didn't even know there was one available. I have a few good shots of the F2004 from this years Australian GP if you want them. They're all of the front end wit the nose cone removed and some brake detail. Just email me if you want them and I'll send them.

pingtang, you've done a very nice job on those exhausts.

Mate, I'm afraid that's not my handy work. I got it from the Tamiya site and thought it would illustrate my point. Wish it was though, they are very nice.
