revell bmw z8 or viper??
Posted by gwaihir on Sunday, December 5, 2004 8:52 PM
Hello.
Up to this point I have only built aircraft models, but would really like to give autos a try. I am curious if either the revell bmw z8 or dodge viper would be a pleasant experience. I think I can get either for about $10. I know revell kits (at least for aircraft) can be a good or a terrible build - just trying to ask for a little advice before jumping in and having trouble on my first build.

If both of them are really terrible, I might save a little more and try Tamiya's bmw z3, but I would prefer the cheaper for my first build which will probably be a learning experience.

Thanks for any help / advice.

Leon - it depends what you want from the finished model and how much you want to put into it. Most of the Revell, in my experience, are OK, but need just that little bit more work cleaning individual parts etc. Also they are probably not as detailed as the Tamiya and the instructions leave you to do a bit more research. Revell also mark their kits on expected skill levels 1-5. They mark #5 as for an experienced modeller but even these are not much of a challenge compared to some kits. That is maybe worth bearing in mind because you may pick up a kit with a skill level (say #3) and be disappointed with the level of detail whch won't then compare with Tamiya. In the end you get what you pay for I'm afraid. Hope this helps a little - best of luck. Martin

Do you want full detail or curbside(no engine detail)? If full detail, go with the Viper. It is a nice kit, originally a snap kit. Builds rather nice.

Stay away from the Tamiya Z3. It's a kit of prototype and it's all wrong starting with the wrong wheels and incorrect interior. The Revell Z8 is a great kit.. Originally a Revell Germany kit. Fujimi did a prepainted body Z3 a while back. I'm not sure if it's still out there.

The Z-8 doesn't have engine detail. The Viper has everything.I'd go with the Viper.Plus, the Viper is one awesome car. It'll eat BMW's all day,and not even have to rest.

C'mon, you're asking for a choice between the Z8 and the Viper? OFCOURSE the Viper, if for no other reaso than that it's a Viper.
I didn't realize the Z8 had no engine deail, which at least in my experience, is something I'm not used to in a Revell kit, and just plain hate in any auto kit.
