Dust on models

you mean deep stuck on dust that won't simply wipe off?

That is a problem.  I have never heard of a product, if it exists, I would love to try it.  I have over 30 planes in boxes cause I am sick of them getting dull and dusty in my room.  To compound the problem, where I work is where my wife keeps the stupid cat litre box making the room a mess.  I recently lucked out and got a shelf in my office that has glass sliding doors.  Everything new I build I am moving there.  I want to build a large glass case at home but can't afford it.  They are brutally expensive. That is a problem with modeling.  Space and display.

The only thing that I've ever tried that worked for me, was giving them a bath in a sink with warm water with a little "mild" soap. Then gently rub them down with a Q-Tip followed by a good rinsing. If I had some that where stubborn, I'd "gently" rub them down with original Crest toothpaste keeping them very wet. Some I've even followed up with either an automotive polishing compound or just a good paste wax.

I should mention that my cars were painted with enamel. Ones with decals, you don't want to soak in the bath too long or rub too hard.

If there's an easier way, I sure would have liked to known about it.

I'm planning on glass display cabinets from now on. 

re the cost of a glass display case, try 2.5mm perspex instead. Where I live, it costs about €40 for a 6" x 4" sheet. You can cut it yourself to whatever size you want, its just as clear as glass, lighter and a hell of a lot safer cos it wont shatter into a million pieces. Its also damn hard to accidentally break anyway.

I made a small display case using it which is now overflowing, so Im planning on turning a shelf the entire length of the wall into one big case. Perspex is the man.

If you have an IKEA nearby, you can get a glass case for ~80 dollars. It is perfect for 1/48 Props & 1/72 Jets. They sell bigger cases, for not much more...maybe ~150.

I have two of these: (@ $60 a pop...not bad)

Width: 16 3/4 "
Depth: 14 3/8 "
Height: 64 1/8 "
Max load/shelf: 13 lb

I can fit two models on each shelf (three, if one is on one of my "in-flight" stands). If you want to get daring, you can always install more shelves. They are just square pieces of glass, resting on two horizontal steel rods welded to the vertical rods. A little JB weld, or some small tapping and drilling is all you would have to do to install more horizontal rods to support more shelves.

When I get home, I'll post a picture of one of mine.

They sell bigger ones, but they are not shown online. I guess they might be in-store only types of things.

You could be daring here too. I suspect the backing of this is just a thin peice of cardboard...pretty standard on do-it-yourself furniture. All you would need to do is get a couple of wood boards (the same thickness as the walls of this self) and measure out 2" or however deep(er) you need. A couple dowel pins and little "Liquid Nails" wood glue and you've made the shelf deeper.

I was just thinking about your more shelves idea.  Looks like it would take a bit of work but is doable.  You could probably add about 4 more shelves.  The price is pretty good.  I may need to drive by an Ikea to look about the large units.
