Hi-gloss auto finish?
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, December 11, 2004 4:02 PM
HI all,
I usually build aircraft but I've got the itch to build a few autos recently. I'm wondering how different auto modelers get a high gloss finish on their rides? I've read somewhere about a polishing compound and fine finishing films (ie 2000+ grit). I'm using an airbrush and enamel paints. I'd like to get a good polishing routine down on the first couple of cars I build. How do you guys do it? Where do you get your supplies?
any help would be great.
TIA,
chrisj

For a high gloss mirror like finish you might try out some real auto stuff. I just tested Meguiar's Deep crystal polish step 2 and Deep crystal carnauba wax step 3 and they rock!
You might also get some micromesh polishing cloths, they come in a variaty of grits and ends up on 12000! I usually start with 2400 or 3200 and goes to about 4000 or 6000 before polish and wax treatment.
The only thing to think about whit real auto products is to test them on that particular paint brand and type as some polishes will attack the paint and make it dull instead of bright and shiny. This is extra important if you use acrylics as they are more sensitive than enamels and laquers.

Good luck!

I use either the Tamiya polish or a car polish. Niclas is right about testing it first. Also be very careful that you don't rub right through the paint as unlike a real car your coat will be much thinner. Panel lins or body ridges can be a problem so just be aware of them when you start. Paint up an old body or a cheap plastic toy and test polish. FSM had an artcile several months ago on this subject.
