M1 configuration

Quick one for you knowledgeable guys... The config on the M1 as-is - is that an early-season config or not? From the exhaust I suspect it might be, but not sure.

The only reason I'm asking, is to find whether it will be appropriate to make it an South African race version. Which is the only way I'll get myself not to get some (still non-existent, strangely enough) tobacco sponsorship markings to get rid of the GO!!!!!!!.

Do you mean the five BMW M1 racers that competed at Kyalami in 1979?

If so, they were early versions from the Procar series.
Here are the five teams.
Kyalami 1000km
Kelleners / Keizan - Eggenberger 1st 1st
Stuck / Winkelhock - Manfred Cassani 2nd 2nd
Mass / Watson - Project Four 4th 4th
Surer / van Rooyen - Max Heidegger DNF -

Hi SeaBee, I'm looking forward to some progress pics of this one!
I would agree with you that the kit is most likely early season version. I'm going to look at my references and see what I can dig out. I'll get back on that one.

It's Museum Collection with the difficulties that bring but I guess Studio 27 won't lagg that long. In this set you also get the decals for the Fortuna testbike!

Thanks Joel! I will be holding my horses for quite a while, unfortunately. Have so much of a backlog and moving house did not help much. Only started working on my Camel Honda and my long-running Ferrari project over this weekend. 2 months of withdrawal!

What do you mean by "Museum Collection with the difficulties that bring"? Please don't tell me all their decals are as hard to use as their CF decals, which I had quite a hellish time with... because I have a few of them, incl the 1:12 F2002's decals...

Hi again!
Better show some progress for that Honda SeaBee, need some inspiration to finish off on my own. The RCV:s have a tendency to gather up... I finished 3 of them in March, doing three more now and still there's yet another 6 of them to finish after that (so far...) Better to do a M1 or perhaps an old NSR in between...

Now to the Museum collection decals, or atleast to my opinion on them. I'll say they pretty good when it comes to color and matching the real item, the problem is that they are pretty fragile and can't really stand any work to get them to conform. They tear pretty easy. I had serious problems on my Teléfonica RCV test machine cause the white stripe running across the whole bike and the Honda wings on the tank got injured during application. So, be careful and when using MC decals on complex areas, the Tobacco comersials shouldn't be a problem at all though as they are not that complicated.

*Phew*, so glad you said they're thin and fragile! The mentioned CF decal from them was just the opposite. Added it on the RC211V's rear "mud guard"(?) and had all kinds of trouble. It was as stiff as cardboard and did not stick to even the flattest of parts. I'd rather be overly carefull than to have to go through that again!

Yeah, tell me about the gathering of the RC211V's... I'm not quite at six, but four is bad enough! I will try and post some pics. I see you are also buzy with the same one (Camel). But from your signature it seems you are further than me. I just assembled the exhausts (hoping I did not bugger it up) and started their painting.

Completely (even more) off topic: how's that Panizzi bro's pug looking nowadays?

From the photo which I took during Malaysian GP, the exhaust matches the Tamiya kit quite closely from manifold to the muffler.

Is there any other site where someone completed their M1? I was waiting for someone to post something about the new Tamiya beauty for weeks and strangely...it seems that not many M1 fans out there aas compare to the RCV.

The pic in the signature is from the real works so not that much yet but close enough. The Peugeot was supposed to be finished to christmas (at first it was supposed to be finished before summer...) but I got into some trouble originating from the fact that it's my first car model. I have taken some photos for the group build but they are on another computer without internet access. Have to work on that.

I picked up an M1 myself today. It looks every bit as good as the RC211V kits, anyone started working on theirs yet? I might have to get some of those Tobacco decals too, I'll see if I can find some in australia. Can't wait to get working on this one.

I wonder how painful it is to finished a bike like that! Impresive.....As for the new kit from Tamiya, I expected more from them especially the details on the engine department. Missing the very noticeable fuel tank breather hose too.

So the Museum collection Yamaha M1 decals are out on HLJ. So go shop you that have awaited them! David from Scaleracecars wrote on another forum that Studio27 will not make these so I can't see that there will be a better option

Just received my M1 'Gauloises' decal which I order from mediamixhobby. And I think it's worh it , futhermore it's printed by cartograph. But I'm not too impress with Ragged Edge's decal for 12th scale F1 car. The print is not so sharp.

It's by Tabu. With pile of S27 decal in my collection, wonder when will I able to complete to use all of them. For thoose thinking about getting M1 Cig. decal, go for Tabu.

I've ordered the MC ones, but heard (after that) from the F1 guys that the Tabu decals are actually very good. Haven't used any myself, but I'll keep it in mind for a next time for sure...

Tabu's 'Gauloises' decal size match with Tamiya's 'Go!!!!!!' too. As long it is printed by Cartograph, I've no worry about the crispness of the print.

Just received my latest order of Renaissance 'Gauloises' decal and I do not recomend it ! The decal for front cowling ( below competition no's) no design. Tabu the best at the moment.

So far the M1 is as good as the RCV, but I still think on the detail side it can be better. Tamiya should throw in some PE parts for this kit. I will be on duty for next week MGP test at Sepang circuit and hope I can shoot some spy shot of 2005 machine. Will keep you guys update.

It's fairly straightforward, except for the rear swingarm and suspension assembly - this is really tight to the main chassis, and its a fairly high chance you can break something important in there.
