Engine paint resource?
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, December 30, 2004 8:28 PM
Hello, I'm not normally a car builder but I am working on a project and need some resources.

The kit I have doesn't have a painting reference guide in the instructions and I have no clue what to paint the engine parts. Any one know a resource site that would show me a rough idea of the engine compartment of an early seventies car? Specifically a Ford Galaxie, but any car of the era would be better than nothing! Big Smile [:D]

Thanks!

I made some googling and found this pic of a 1971 galaxie 500 engine. In my opinion it's fine to mix a colour that's close to what the eyes tell you is right. If you also weather the engine with dust,oil- and fuel stains no one will ever tell you it's the wrong colour.

Good luck and a happy new year!

If you're building it replica stock, go to the Wal-Mart (or whatever) automotive section and pick up some 1:1 engine paint in Ford blue, Chevy orange, etc. I've used it for years on kits and have had no problems with it harming the plastic.
If it's going to be a hot rod or custom, paint it whatever color you like. Testors Metalizers are great for doing aluminum intakes, cast iron exhaust manifolds. etc.
Try looking on eBay for the 1:1 car you are building. Sellers usually include lots of pics of the vehicle they are selling. Good luck!

Testors Model Master paint series has engine colors, including Ford Blue and Ford Red. The typical Ford Galaxie engine would be Ford Engine Blue. In the late 60s there were some "special" Galaxie 500s that had 7 liter big block engines that were painted Ford Engine Red, as were the Thunderbird engines.

There are a couple of Ford Engine blues. The earlier shade was called "Corporate Blue" and was first used at about 1948 on the flat head V-8s. The new blue came about in the 1960s. There is not much difference in the two blue shades, but they are different. The later blue is slightly darker. rangerj

Correction: The Ford engine blue used in the 1960s is slightly LIGHTER than the Corporate blue used in 1948. So, the lighter shade of Ford engine blue would be appropriate for the Galaxie if you use Model Masters engine paint. Sorry. rangerj

I agree with rangerj. My references show the Ford Engine Blue (used until early seventies) slightly lighter than Corporate Blue. Regarding the engine compartment, Ford used to paint the inner fenders and front crossmember (radiator attachment & side panels) a semi-matt black (Chassis Black) on body-on-chassis cars. Unit-body vehicles had inner fenders in body color. The firewall is body color in all cases. I hope this can be of help. Happy modelling !
