Car body touch up?
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, January 7, 2005 10:16 AM
I just finished a 1960 Ford Starliner. I used Model Master's Custom 2 step Lacquer(base coat, ultra gloss clearcoat) in Dark Cherry Pearl. When detail painting the Chrome trim, I got a bit of chrome paint on the body color, which I touched up once the chrome was dry. But, you can see where I touched up the body color. What can I do to make the body color look uniform? I've been building models for ever, but am still some what of a novice when it comes to the paint looking perfect.

Any suggestions, products, etc???

To get it to look right, you're probably gonna have to do what real auto body shops do. Mask off the entire affected section, like a door, hood, fender, etc sand it smooth or a very good feathering, and repaint that section. Most anything else will look like a repair job. That's why a 1" scratch costs $2000 to fix!!!

Probably some guys here who can do spot repairs on gloss car finishes, I can't. Flat aircraft finshes, they're easy!

Archer out.

Try wet sanding the mistake with 2000 wet/dry sandpaper. Try not to break through the clear coat, but just remove the chrome color. Once the chrome paint is removed the spot can be polished with a mild compound or tooth paste (not gel) and waxed. rangerj
