CUSTOMIZING HARLEY'S
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, January 20, 2005 1:38 PM
Hi to all,
I am a new member to the forum and after spending a few days reading many other posts and replies I have realised that I should of registered many months ago. It's great to see this hobby of ours is still growing.
I had two Harley 1/9 th scale kits which I was going to build straight out of the box , a police electra glide and a XLH 1200 sportster. Both offered a good deal of detail and the first was a pleasure except for the quality of the casting was a little poor in places. The second I decided to customise into a modern chopper with most of the frame , parts of the engine and the tank being scrathbuilt. The problem I have is with the wheels. As I stretched the frame and widened it the stock wheels were no good.I have made a few hub designs but have not been able to get tires to fit.I have tried auto tyres in different scales but none had the modern bike tyre curved shape.Any ideas as too aftermarket tyres or other appropriate kits that I can use.
Sorry to rabble on but I cannot finish this project without them.

Many thanks Simon.

There are a few custom diecast bikes available that you might be able to scrounge the tires from. They are either the Jesse James or OCC type.
Bad thing is that they are 1/10 scale (I think).
Hope that this helps.

Simon who makes those 1/9 kits??

The only 2 offerings that I am aware of on these bikes is Tamiya and they are 1/6.

Ray,
Thanks for the tip I will certainly look into that.
Model museum,
Both kits are from Revell. The sportster is kit no.07904 but I couldn't locate the Police Electra Glide no.But they did do a standard Electra Glide kit no. 07951.They also did two other kits of Harley's a FXSTB Bad Boy kit no. 07903 and a FXSTS Springer Softail kit no. 07901.I have had a quick check and I cannot see these kits listed but I am sure if they don't produce these any more there would be a few floating around.
Many thanks again to you both.
Simon.

Simon.

Thanks, for the info. Just wondering if they might be part of the reboxed Protar Kits.

My prefered Bike scale is 1/12 by the way. Preferably Aoshima or Imai kits.

Hey there Simon:
I build the REAL things for a living, and I have had trouble finding tires to match for a custom build. Keep plugging away on your search, and the best of luck, John.
