Calling Ferrari Fans - 1/24 Fujimi 330/P4
Posted by Martsmodels on Friday, June 6, 2003 9:01 AM
I have just started to prepare the body on this kit.
Are the driver's mirrors on the wings (fenders if you prefer)
supposed to be flared in or were they add-ons?

Help appreciated. Thanks

I know the guy that owns the P4 that won Daytona in 1967. He has pictures posted on another site but the link will not work. I will have him send me pictures and post them here for you. The car is undergoing restoration and he has a BUNCH of excellent detail pictures.

That's great! Thanks Rick. There seem to be plenty of model photos on the net but I can't see one that shows the car close enough to see that detail around the mirrors. I know the P3 had its mirrors on stalks in the same place and wondered if they had just made the pods and bolted them on for the P4

Crasher,
This is a nasty one - I've seen photos of the 330/P4 with mirrors on stalks AND mirrors in the faired in pods on the front fenders. I guess it depends on the owner/driver and the race because these cars tended to be slightly evolutionary - the same chassis often underwent slight changes to running gear and bodywork throughout the racing season- there's so many different variables. To make life easier, I either build a car however I want and pay little attention to historical accuracy, or choose to model a specific car as it appeared at a particular race meeting. Either way, you pick yer poison.
Good luck,
LeeTree

Lee Tree - I agree with that. I've been doing some more digging and it seems that the #21 car for 67 Le Mans, which is the one in the kit, did have the large pods - however the Daytona car had smaller mirrors on stalks further towards the front. Some pictures even show the #21 without the mirrors all together (maybe in later races).
From this I deduce that the pods were not flared into the bodywork which was my original query. I presume that they all must have been add-ons whichever configuration you choose. Anyway I'll build as in the kit as I don't have anymore decals, and leave a slight panel line around the fixing onto the wing. That should do it!!

Cheers

Crasher,
The faired mirror pods would have been separate units that would have been pop-riveted onto the bodywork - if they were removed, then the holes would have been filled (probably a spot of mig-weld) and filed down and the panel repainted so that the morrors on stalks could have been attached.
It can be difficult modelling a specific car over its racing life as there can be so many changes - look at the GT-40's for example - any particular chassis may have gotten a different engine, wheels, bodywork, nose, lights.........whatever.
Post some pictures of the car when you're done....I'd like to see it.
Cheers,

Just warning you, the decals are THICK, and do not blend in well with all those curves...
