Some kits were shrink wrapped, some weren't. (speaking of which; I got a 1962 Aurora kit off ebay that was in it's worn/brittle/yellowed original plastic, with a yellowed sticker on one end that had ".59c" wrote on it, in Fountain Pen.)
At the same time, I remember buying an Aurora 1:72 Boeing 737 in 1973-74, and the box was
taped closed on the sides. Go figure?
Remember back when you had to open and inspect models before buying them at the store, to make sure all the parts were still there... a practice that I'm sure inspired the model companies to start wraping them all.
