Strange Yamaha Decals
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, May 31, 2005 3:12 AM
While looking through my collection for the next Tamiya bike kit to build I came across a Yamaha YZR500 '01 Tamiya Kit 88 with some "strange Decals". The basic kit is a red yamaha number 3 with only scant decals, while on the sheet there are some lovel decals but no reference on the Tamiya decal placement instructions other than "decals 25 - 46 placemnet not supplied". I tried the internet but so far my search has not thrown any light on this colous scheme. The scheme looks great and I especially like the black/white chevrons. Can any one provide any info or lonks as I would really like to do this bike

Thanks
Andrew

It's Max Biagi's Yamaha 500... The one that ehhrrr... had the tendancy to loose the front-end whilst under pressure from a yellow Nastr Azzuro Honda #46, if I recall correctly. Wink [;)]

No Marlboro decals, but it can be obtained from a variety of shops and a variety of manufacturers - try Studio 27 to start off with. Without it, the bike does tend to look a bit bare!

You can see a pic of the finished model on Tamiya's site, if memory serves me right. Also try hlj.com - they have good references at times. They'll also sell the "missing" tobacco sponsorship. Otherwise, how is the box-art?

But if there is a real prob, tell us which decals are included and somebody will try to help. I have not done the bike myself, but we'll be able to sort it out, don't worry...

Definetly HLJ.com. If memory serves, they have the full sheet for that model. More than one option, also. The standard Marlboro with slight differences for two different races, and the #3(0) to celebrate Biaggi's 30th birthday. Haven't done this one yet either, kinda lost interest in the 2-stroke Yamis since the M1 came out, but I have done 3 YZR-500s, post up if you hit any snags.

This was news for me...have to look at my sheet if it's supplied, it would be distinctively cool to have the 3(0) version.

Thanks for all the info from you all. I have ordered the following sheet from HLJ "Studio 27 1/12 YZR500 Marlboro Late Ver. Studio27 Original Decal", but I could not tell if this had the version I am referring to or just the "missing" tobacco sponsorship. Will check Tamiya site to see if I can still find the picture refered to by SeeBee

Thanks for info so far

Yeah, I knew about Max having a 3(2) for practise on the Camel RC211V, but not the 3(0), both for his birthdays. Goes to show, you're never too old to learn!

Andrew, that decal sounds about right by description. I saw some pics on the hlj site as well - without the decals you ordered, obviously. S27 usually gives a full sheet, with good descriptions. Otherwise the description would have been in the line of "additional/tobacco decals".

Keep us up-to-date!

I just looked at Best1hobby, the sheet # for the #3(0) Biaggi's is STDC521C. They call it "YZR 500 'Marlboro' decal 2001 late version. I haven't looked on HLJ lately...

Hi, more details. The decal sheet I ordered from HJL arrived today in the post, just two weeks after placing the order with HLJ, good service from HLJ and the South African postal service. The sheet I got is the Max 3(0) one the one STDC521C referred to by Yamafreak72 and is great sheet especially with the "Happy Birthday". Checked out Tamiya site but could only find the plain colour scheme and not the scheme with the additional decals 25 to 45. The additional decals have a number of white squares included and a set of black and white stripes for the tail peice so I assume it is a Marlboro colour scheme of some sort. Decal 44-45 includes some cool arrow heads etc but still no progress of what this bike actually looked like, definitely not Max3(0) birthday scheme as I now have this one in the box too, Anyone through more light on this I would be most grateful as now I really want to build this scheme because it is so different

Thanks for all the helps so far

Hey, another South African! I am not alone... Wink [;)] You were in luck, mate, because I had to wait for ages sometimes, esp if it's a kit in the package. Once it was at customs for more than a week! But yes, decals tend to fly through.

What you can try, is this site for reference pics. I have not looked at that topic and was not on that site for a while now, but have a quick check and see if it can help...

Thanks for the link SeaBee, tried to check but can not access site, surf control at work? Yes was lucky with the post, and it was a fair size parcel as I had bought Tamiya 14001 Yamaha kit and some tools as well, will keep trying to find some reference to the bike, maybe I should try e-mailing Tamiya since they made the decals sheeet they must know something? Is this an option?
