How to imitate wood?

I have two paint my 1/24 '70 Boss Mustang from Monogram, but in the instruction sheet it says that i must paint some parts (in the dashboard) with "wood"... but how to make it more realistic?... I have also a 1/36 Lexus SC430... it is a pull-back action car, but i've noticed that this little car is nicely detailed in the interior... I've seen photos of the real car and it have wood parts in the steering wheel, dashboard and the inner sides of the doors... but how to paint them?...

On the model I'm building now and my most recent finished model, I used real wood in the areas where there was wood in the prototype, such as the dashboard trim. I used balsa or basswood bits and pieces and I stained them the appropriate color. There's nothing like real wood to simulate wood!

Use Model Master wood mixed with as much gloss brown as desireable. Paint all the wood using this. After it dries apply a brown wash to the grain. After it dries apply a thick gloss coat to give it an even looking finish.

There was a nice article on how to paint realstic wood on Hyperscale. You'll have to ask other Hyperscale members where it is. I have not a clue.

you can use the very fine veneer of wood that come wrapped around individual cigars or the sheets of veneer that come between layers in boxes of cigars. Cut the wood to shape, glue it in place, sand it , stain it and varnish it

Zero - I'd try to avoid using the Balsa. The bassword is just slightly harder. It's still very easy to work with, but it holds it's shape much better.

That being said, I'd look for scraps of walnut and/or mahagony and use the actual thing. A hand-rubbed poly-euro (6 - 8 coats) will give you a very nice result. The key is to pay close attention to the grain. You want something that's very tight so that it appears in scale.

I think I read this idea in a recent model magazine. Use the sample swatches of wood stain found in stores in the paint and wood stain isles.

I use the followeing thechique for wood.

1) prime with grey primer
2) draw the woodgrain with a brown pencil
3) coat with tamiya Clear Orange

This is a very simple methode to get a wood effect.

I do think wood grain at that scale should be subtle-a brush with splayed hairs worked best!

Would it not be possible that there is wood decal somewhere out there ? At least I would imagine there is, after all they make carbon decal as well.
And if it doesn't exist, here is an idea for the decal printers and AM manufactorers Smile [:)]

The model I'm building (Tamiya's Jeep Cherokee Limited which I'm still converting to a tornado chase vehicle) has decals representing the wood trim, but like I said early in this thread, I stained real wood the proper color and used that.
