Request for Guidance - race car weathering

I absolutely LOVED LeMans with Steve McQueen. I just picked up Fujimi's 1/24 Porsche 917 in the 1970 LeMans markings, and I would like to do some weathering on the vehicle as it appeared towards the end of the movie. I am an aircraft modeler, so cars are new ground for me for the most part. Can anybody point me towards some on-line resources or literature for this?
