Zeke, So far with my experience with Tamiya acrylics I have not had to thin them and they spray fine. Did you use distilled water? That and alcohol is what I have seen suggested to use.

Zeke, I ran into the same exact problem the first time I used Tamiya acrylics. I thinned them with water, and they wouldn't cover very well. Then I thinned with alcohol, and they would cover fine except over the parts I already had sprayed with the water-thinned paint. On those parts, I got the grainy, dusty look you describe. So, in summary, don't use water to thin Tamiya acrylics, use isopropyl alcohol (70% concentration works fine for me) or Tamiya thinner.

I've tried thinning with water and I wasn't pleased with the results. Now I use isopropyl and I haven't had any problems.

This one is thinned with water but it's hard to find the right mixture.

Now I use automotive thinner, for me this works the best, compare the results.

Thanks Lee, will definately try the alcohol. Thought the tamiya thinner smelled like it and it would be alot cheaper. Ed

Ed,
I've heard many times that you can thin Tamiya acrylics with water, but I've never used water before.
I always use Isopropyl alcohol, and always get perfect results. It flashes off (evaporates) better than water - sorry I can't give you more info.......
I've used Tamiya thinner before, but I think the alcohol works better, and it's much cheaper.

Tamiya acrylics

I've just used a tamiya acrylic for the first time, and ran into some problems with it. I thinned it with water before reading on the bottle that I was supposed to use tamiyas own brand of thinner. I went and got the thinner and now when i use the paint it looks like it has dust in it, but other painting that was done at the same time seems fine. Did I ruin the paint by trying to thin with water? It seems like I read that you could use water to thin acrylics. Also what else would work besides the Tamiya thinner? Thanks again for any help. Ed
