'55 Mille Miglia - Mercedes 300SL refs?
Posted by Martsmodels on Sunday, August 14, 2005 8:50 PM

Stirling Moss' win in the 300SLR has passed into legend but a lesser known hero of that race was an American driver John Cooper Fitch who drove a works, but more or less standard, 300SL into 5th place overall behind four out and out racing machines. It was during discussions that Fitch and Jenkinson together came up with the now famous 'toilet roll' route planner which enabled Moss to drive the 1000kms at 10 10ths. Fitch also used a similar method in the race.

That car is always referred to as the 'Dark Mercedes' and I believe it was either black or dark blue (more likely black). There are a number of diecast models available but they seem to differ in details.

I am planning a detailed 1/12 300SL of Fitch's car and wonder if anyone has any reference material.

Was the 'Dark Mercedes' indeed black or blue and what colour was the interior?

Any ideas appreciated - thanks

Martin.

Thanks Andy - that would be great. I have one or two photos taken during the race but they are all b/w and don't show much detail.

Regards - Martin

Here's some pics I took of a 60 300SL at a nice little museum in Oxnard, Ca. Hope this helps.
