Ordinary vinegar works as well but takes a day or so.

I use spray oven cleaner; spray it on, drop it in a ziploc baggie and wait about an hour. Open the baggie, hold it under the faucet to rinse the baggie and part clean. The baggie is important; the fumes are dangerous and you really do not want the oven cleaner on your skin.

Westley's Bleach right tire cleaner works well also.

I used a clorox gel, its got bleach in it to strip chrome, works in about 10 minutes with no toothbrush work.

I'll give that a try. I am a little dissapointed in the AMT kit. the headlights are chromed over as well and the drive shaft is molded as part of the frame... definite kit-bashing time.

You could always soak it and then paint it black , tape off and then use Alclad chrome. If I did the front I might also do the back just to have the same finish on both. Stripping the back would depend on how similar it was to the front.

Anything with alcohol will strip the chrome. I use Pine-Sol.

Castrol Super Clean strips kit chrome very well.
Is the bumper and grill one assembly?
You will need to soak the part so if they are one piece, this would be a problem unless you separtate them, then you would have to deal with the damage done to the bumper!

Hey, How do you guys remove the metallic finish off of bumper assemblies that were supposed to be painted?
I'm working on my chevelle and need to take the chrome finish off the grille to paint it black, but the finish on the bumper needs to stay.
