Impala '58 on the go!
Posted by proosen on Friday, September 9, 2005 2:29 AM
Hi all!
Fresh from the paint shop, corall blue and pure white from Tamiya shot straight from the can. Maybe I'll put on some blue and/or green pearl on top of the blue and then some clear coats to polish out. If my father reads this...get the h**l out of here, this is your's for christmas when it's ready.
Well, it's just to get a move on and finish it until then. I have the MCG etch fret for this one and plan to use most of it inside and out. It will be a stocker with maybe a bit lower suspension to get a better stance on it.
I didn't succed with the separation line between the blue and white so I'll have to carefully sand it straight and nice, a bit nerve wrecking if you know what I mean. You can see it in the last picture, it's kind of a ragged edge.

Very cool old Chevy, and the colours work well with that car. It will be beautiful when finished. The BMF will keep you busy for awhile on this one.

Coincidentally, I recently picked up a 58 Chevy to build for my Father. His first car was a black and white 58 Biscayne 4dr. I have been searching for a resin 4dr 58 Chevy, but no luck, so I'll likely build the Impala straight out of the box. I considered modifying the kit into a 4dr Biscayne, but at the rate that I build, it would take me forever to get it done.

Your is looking very nice. I'll be watching for progress updates.

Now you've done it! I've got a '58 Impala that has been half-finished for about 2 years, and now I've got to get it down and finish it. It's all your fault. LO

No really, Your build looks really great. Can't wait to see more pics.

Niclas,

If I remember correctly that is the old AMT kit still being produced by ERTL. It is still a great kit, and you have done a sweet paint job on it. The 58 was the first of the Chevys to have a big block engine. it had a 348 CID truck engine in it and was available with three 2 bbl carbs. It also had an air ride suspension that was supplied with compressed air from an air compressor driven off of the motor. I think the kit contains some of these details. You could "steal" the 348 from either the 59 or 60 Chevy Impala made by Monogram. The Mnogram engines are a little more detailed and accurate.

Have fum applying Bare Metal foil to all of that 50s era chrome. It was all chrome plated back then, not like the polished aluminum today. Its a great old car and a great old kit, and it looks like you are on your way to doing a super build.

Niclas,
Those ragged paint edges can be helped by cutting your own masking tape edges-the factory ones are beat up! Also apply light coats of paint. Remember-light colours go down first! Looking good!!

Thank's man, but that's what I did.
For some reason I stressed through the masking session and didn't check the edge thoroughly before applying the paint...Clown [:o)]
So, once again I learn the hard way that cutting the corners is not the way to go for a good result.
I've just done some sanding and masking but my baby daughter woke up and stalled the project for a while.
Mixed some green pearl to put on the blue base coat for some colour shifting, maybe not factory correct but I don't care that much. Maybe some white pearl on the roof to be consistent.
It'll be a kind of semi-kustom, just a lowered suspension and a little more fancy paint job but leave the rest as is.

The only way to be really sure that no paint will blead under the masking tape is to spray clear on the tape edges, and only then spray the color.

I'm hopin' it has a 348 with a Turboglide. Can't get much more vintage than that!

Thank's guys!
348 it is, single or tri-carb. Don't know about the automatic?
Managed to get some green pearl on the hood, doors and front pan today. Looks good, very subtle and hardly noticeable unless you compare it to the body that's still in the coral blue base coat. The idea is to get a blue body that changes over in a more greenish hue.
I have some pics for you as soon as there is any sun up and around.

Cheers!

More then a year since I last did some work on this car, but hey it's back to haunt you all again....and me too for that matter
It was supposed to be finished for last years christmas but that never happend. So I try to do it this year instead.
Applied some BMF last night and beside some minor artistic interpretations I still have to add it's bright work are finished.

I've modified the dash to accomodate the new gauge faces. The main cluster will be mounted from behind and the three small ones will be put in new frames directly on the surface.

I sanded off the rough texture on the front- and rear bench and got some new piping on to the rear seat. Still have the front seat to do.
Some primer and sanding and it will be ready for paint.
Some serious masking needed for this one.

Something like this but in blue/green instead.
