Is BIG beautiful???
Posted by Martsmodels on Tuesday, September 20, 2005 11:15 PM

Hi Guys - my brother and sister came to visit last weekend. We hadn't seen each other for 3 years but are pretty close.

Knowing my interest in modelling they had kept in touch with updates to my photosite - new models - etc etc.

1/8 - 1/43 (and in-between) means nothing to them, but I noticed that, although they were familiar with the pictures of all the models the larger scales won every time.

I wondered if anyone has noticed the same thing?

Have you ever shown a well worked model to a friend and his mate says 'I used to make plastic models' - how infuriating is that??

Have you ever worked for weeks detailing something to the n'th degree and then done another kerbside in a week which you liked better?

And who has tried a really detailed 1/43? I haven't, but I admire the guys that do.

It's all relative after all isn't it?

Just a light hearted post as I'm sure you all have experiences similiar to mine.

Let's hear from you. Regards - Martin

I won't post any pics - they are all on the link below - some are very old - (in fact they range from 'very old' to 'not very good') - at least you get some idea of my interests.

Hmmm... yes, that "I built platic models at school" kinda comment really gets me worked up (well, okay, as worked up as I can get...)

But agreed, for other people, bigger is better. It's more visual, you spot it easier, you see more detail. My rather average attempt at the Ferrari 641/2 gets much more positive comments than a 1:24 car I just finished - which is much more detailed for the scale, better built, you name it.

43rd is untouched by me, but I've seen some guys doing to a 43rd F1 that they had to convince me the pics were really of a 43rd kit. Incredible what some guys are up to!

And yes, yes, yes... I have very recently built two curbside models. One a BAR converted from a Tamiya 1:20 Ferrari, I was pretty impressed. Then went ahead and quickly built a Revell 1:24 Jordan, really flying through it, just to get to the Revell "building process" before taking on their F2002. Apart from the one wheel ending a bit out of line, it ended up a much better-looking model!

What a lovely, yet completely un-understandable hobby we have! You build up a highly detailed interior (or bike engine) just to cover it all... As my wife says: At least you know in your heart what you did. And more importantly, it's something that takes you away from all the stress, etc for that while.

I bought a kit at a local department store and the cashier asked if I build them.

I have had my sisters or brother in law come over and look at my models, and the only way they even notice the engine is because they turned it over and the hood fell off!
