WRC Focus & 911 GT1

Joel, I've "owed" you this pic for a while now! The dirtied-up Focus - I'll include a pre-dirtied pic for those that weren't in th WRC GB as well...

From here...

I went here...

There are some error, biggest was that I forgot to mask off the track of the wipers.Banged Head [banghead]

Next up the see-through Porsche 911 GT1. I whitened it up, in the end with an attempted fade-out. Look better irl than on the pics. What happened was that the whole cage, etc was closed off anyways with doors that weren't see-through, so a clear shell would have helped only so much and the white actually adds a lot for the decals of the car.

So, these were both sort of experiments, trying to work on techniques. So don't be too harsh.

a 'before & after' the rally... Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]
the windshield wiper trax would have looked cool,
too !
was the see-thru body on the GT a stock kit part ?
i have a tamiya kit that looks similar but the body is molded in white...
thanx 4 sharing ur work !

man that focus just looks like it came right out of the mud! It looks great! The porshe is nice, though, i'm not sure for the concept you are going for, but it still looks like a lot of effort went into it. Nice builds SeaBee.

I liked the muddy look for the focus. One lil problem though, from the picture you can see that the inside of the rims don't have any mud at all.... From the look of the car that thing's been dipped into some pretty big puddles that pretty much makes your entire chassis an earth color.

A couple of great builds there, SeaBee. The decals on the Porsche look like they would have been a real chore. Nicely done.

Thanks for the compliments guys!

Archangel, spot on! As said, it was my first attempt and I realised a lor of mistakes afterwards. I did underneath, but only afterwards realised I missed out on the wheel wells itself, the brakes and all that... So too, the inside of the wheel. Had to have done that before I attached the wheels! Next time... But thanks, appreciate the constructive critisism! That is why I posted the pics, after all...

Frostygirl: yes, there was a limited (I think) run with that kit in a transparent body. Don't have the box any more, so unfortunately can't tell you the kit number. BTW, the decals aren't as bad as they look. Just do not rush! I did a lot of short decalling sessions, letting all dry before attempting a next section. Some are a bit of a hassle, but in general they really tend to fall in place quite easily.

eizzle: To explain: the whole body came as clear parts. Building it up, though, I found it helped very little at the front, since most are being closed of by a layer underneat of doors, etc that were not clear parts. Don't ask me the logic behind that... With the clear body, the decals also do not really show up. I decided to whiten the front part and to basically ghosted it out at door hight, where the blocked view stops. So solid white from the bottom, ending with a misty white at window level and clear above that. That way more of the decals and the cars original looks can be maintained (where you can't see anything anyways) and the rest was clear. The whole rear part was left clear. Actually looks quite cool irl. I think the flash buggered the effect a bit on the pics. Bottom one shows it best.

SeaBee,

Two very nice builds! I am a Porsche fan first and am getting to like the WRC more and more each day. The Focus does look freshly raced. Great job!

Chris

Now I get it. I didn't understand why only part of the car was painted before. Its hard to see unless you know the body is clear, which I didn't. It makes sense now and looks really good!

Sea Bee,

A very nice set of race cars. I've had the chance to see a real European Rally Race and the cars really do get covered in mud. Your focus looks very real. This is the most hazardous styll of racing I ever witnessed. Can you tell us something about the Focus kit? I understand that the Rally racing Focus is powered by a Cosworth engine. Can you tell us about the Focus drivetrain?

Nice work SeaBee, especially on the Focus. I'm a WRC man myself, so it's good to see this level of weathering. Great inspiration.

Hate to rain on your parade though. For a truly authentic Focus from that year's Rally Deutschland, you need to change the roof scoop & the bonnet, to match the cars that Sainz & McRae drove all year. That version you've done is correct for the Corsica rally (which can also be done from the same kit). At the start of the year Duval & Martin drove WRC 01's, while Sainz/McRae had WRC02's. Actually, to be even more pedantic, their cars started the season with the 01 spec roof scoop & 02 spec bonnet, changing to the 02 spec roof scoop later on. About half way through the year Martin changed to the full 02 spec car, & then Duval got his chance in Germany.

I'm currently doing both versions of this kit - Duval's Corsica car & Martin's German one. The colour scheme looks great. Grand Prix Models in the UK have a transkit from Renaissance which will remedy these 2 things fairly quickly & inexpensively.

Cheers

Thanks for the info Shaun; don't see it as "raining on my parade" at all. Was not aware of those facts!

Admittedly, I built the Focus purely for pleasure and to do something different and did not do much research. Just knew the German version is muddy and went for it! The kid in me came out to play...Blush [:I]

Hey SeaBee

Can't really blame you for the kid wanting to come out to play mate. That's all part of the reason we do this gig isn't it? Still, gotta tell ya, it's the best & most realistic mud weathering I've seen on a model for a long time.

Cheers

Shaun
