detail engine kits ?
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, October 29, 2005 10:13 AM
I'm looking for detailed engine replacement kits. I'm working on a AMT mustang and the AMT engines lack the quality and detail I am looking for, a mater of fact... the AMT models lack a lot of detail I am looking for. Sad [:(] I will probably only use the body and the tires and maybe some interior parts. I can scratch build and scroung for the rest. But I would really like a nicely detailed engine. I have found a couple of engines but they were complete... what's the fun in that? Looking for some assembly required, after all... isn't that why we play this game? Big Smile [:D] Any help with this quest would be very appriciated, thanks.Cool [8D]

Some time ago, either AMT or Revell offered engine kits in 1/24 scale (i think that was the scale). They were called builders packs or something like that. I saw them in an article in the October issue of Scale Auto mag. Maybe you could find something like this on ebay or your LHS. Good luck.

AMT made many Mustangs, and Mustangs had many engines. Which kit are you building, and which engine are you looking for?

I'm building the 66 mustang. Right now my best choice is combining this with revell's 68 mach 1. The reason I like the 66 is because I had one. I was just 16 then and had grand ideas for making it a thing of beauty. Unfortunately, at 16 I had many other things on my mind too. So now I'm going to make it... just a lot smaller (cheaper too!).

Try modelcargarage.com or detailmaster.com. Those are two sites I've used to buy aftermarket upgrades to engines. There's probably a whole slew of other companies as well that I don't know about.

Building Now:

1/48 Academy Bf-109G6 - 100%

1/48 Tamiya F4U-1A - 5%

Upcoming:

1/48 Revell F-14D

The AMT 67 Mustang Fastback has a nice 289 ci V-8 engine that would be correct for the 66 Mustang. In fact the camplete chassis and drive train from the 67 will be very close to correct for the 66. The 67 Mustang is a modern tool, with seperate and acurate drivetrain and suspension components, and is far superior to the 66 Mustang, which dates back to 1965. A kitbash with these two kits will produce a very nice 66 Mustang coupe.

The AMT 67 Shelby GT350 would also work, but will have some Shelby specific engine and chassis parts.
