Hi - I've really no idea how many of these 1/16 kits there are around.  The tooling seems to have been sold on to different manufacturers and they turn up in a lot of different guises.  Personally I love the older type of car and I reckon the scale lends itself nicely to a bit of detailing and gives you a model that is not too big or too small.  I'm getting quite a stash of them as well and am actually selling off 1/24 kits to accommodate them!

At present I have a Minicraft 300SL Gullwing on the workbench which is proving far from easy but should be nice when it's finished (opening doors, bonnet and boot and full spaceframe with a detachable body).

I'm still trying to figure out how to convert the wheels on the SS100 - otherwise it looks a nice kit.

If you are interested there are some more on my photosite (the MG TC is on there)

Cheers - Martin

Your great talent shows through in your pics. "Very, very  Nice."  I'm looking forward to your next build.

PS. I have been collecting those kits over the pat two years, as I believe they are good value for money right now. However  my skill level is still not quite good enough to have a go at them yet.

(I have the MG TC, Jaguar SS100, 31 Ford Hi Boy and Rock'n Roadster.) I'm going to find the Mercedes next after seeing your pics. Do you know how many of these large kits Minicraft has issued?

Thanks, Bill.

Outstanding job Crasher. I've built that kit and agree with your assessment. Although, I do believe that the wheels deserve special mention.

Overall - you did a great job. Love the interior.

Andy.

Nice work, those early 70's Gakken japanese kits are a real pain in the aligment & fitting departement, but with a with a lot of TLC &...patience it's possible to get a great replica:
Interior detailing & hinged doors greatly enhance the kit.

The"hand made" wire wheels are surely the best feature included in the kit, they look stuning on your model, when compared to other Gakken (now minicraft) 1/16 classic car series: Jaguar SS or 28'Lincoln sporting toylike wheels.

Another great classic 1/16 Gakken kit is the '33 Cadillac V16.

......I doubt that any fraulein would enjoy a ride down to MC in those tough road handling & noisy SS, back in '28 it was another adventurous era on german & french roads leading down to the rock of Monaco ( no wonder you get 2 spare tires, her will need them!!!)

I just finished this one yesterday after a two month build, and would you believe the weather turned in the UK! (maybe Fred is chasing Wilma, or the other way round - I don't know)

Anyway - this is my take on a 1928 Mercedes Benz SS - 7.2 litres, straight six, supercharged, which would do over 120mph (I wonder if you needed you own petrol tanker following?). At just over 17feet long and a two seater this must have been just the thing to waft your latest Fraulein down to Monte Carlo. for the weekend..

Enough of my fantasies- here's the model::

This is a 1/16 Academy Minicraft kit - for those interested #1520

It has it's good points and a lot of bad. Parts fit is very good for a model with an assymetrical body (about 12 basic Pieces - total is over 20) so you don't spend a lot of time shaping and sanding. The chassis and engine take approx 60 pieces and need to be aligned preciisely - otherwise the body will not fit, Most of the parts are butt jointed and the plans only show vaqgue arrows as to where they attach. (I spent a lot of time drilling holes and making pegs to strengthen joints).

For a car of this quality the kit is very poor - there are no decals and the dash is supposed to be painted brown!! I made up a set of decals on the computer and mounted them on a .6mm veneer Oak Burr dash (instrument bezels are fusewire),. this was finished off with a screen rail (from refernces) in Chestnut with 1mm Sycamore 'string' to give contrast. The door cappings were treated in the same way with Oak Burr inlays, chestbut and Sycamore stringing.

After that - it looks more like a Merc!

Usual critiques welcome - it's the only way we learn!!

Cheers - Martin .

P.S. After reading this back it sounds more like a revue. I'm going to leave as is - maybe someone, somewhere, can take a tip or a bit of inspiration from something here - - that's what it's all about. Isn't it !!
