Anyone remember late '40s Chevy kits?
Posted by jamnett on Tuesday, December 27, 2005 11:51 PM

I was rummaging through some old photos and came across one with my late father and I and his old Chevy, taken around 1950.  This was among many very old pics my Mom gave me several years ago.  About 5 years ago or so there were two kits released of either '46, '47, or '48 Chevys.  I don't think they were in production for very long, and my 57 year old brain is foggy about the manufacturer.  I do remember it was not an old mainstream big cheese like AMT, Revell, or Lindberg.  Anyhow, I built one and painted it black just like Dad's car was back then.  It was stored with some other things for a while but the box it was in has disappeared???

I was hoping to locate one of these kits in spite of the fact that it will be very hard to find I'm sure.  If anybody has any suggestions as to where to look it would be appreciated. I have been building ship models for several years and I'm kind of out of the loop on car modeling.

It sounds like you might be talking about the Galaxie Chevy aero-sedan and panel wagon. They can be built as a 46, 47 or 48.

Here is their website,

these are very nice kits and I'm pretty sure they are still available, I bought one last year.

Thanks Aaronw.  I checked around and it turns out a LHS right across the river in Portland (Or) can get the aero sedan for me.  My parents were So California car nuts and about 80% of family photos are posed with family vehicles.  I noticed AMT markets a '41 Plymouth kit which was their car when I was born.  I got burned out on detailing ship models and decided to start building a autobiographical collection of cars and trucks.  I had forgotten how much more selection there is for cars and aircraft in comparison to ship models.  I plan to display the photos with the models since most of the pics are no bigger than 5 x 7".

Turns out that quite a few kits are available for my project: '41 Plymouth, '48 Chevy, '56 Chevy Del Ray, early '60s Chev PU, '56 Ford PU, '69 Corvair; and I have family photos to go with most of them.

Thanks for the tip.
