You will have to strip the chrome since nothingwill stick to it (unless you sand it, but it's nearly impossible on complex parts)

There is 3 article on ScaleWiki about that:

- Strip Chrome Parts

- Strip Chrome Parts Using Bleach

- Strip Paint

Painting over chrome is not recommended as the chrome finish won't allow the paint to adhere well. Here is a link to a post that discusses the varius methods of removing the chrome prior to painting.

The best thing to do would be to strip the chrome off of the part before painting it. To do this you use something with bleach, I use Clorox clean up with bleach, just pour it in a small tub, drop your wheels in, and in about 5 minutes you will have bare plastic. Just wash and rinse really good and remember saftey first, wear some heavy rubber gloves, cause bleach ain't good for ya Big Smile [:D]

Painting Over Chrome
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, January 30, 2006 10:02 AM

First off, Hi to everyone on here....This is my first post here.

I've been modeling 1/64th Trucks & Farm equipment for some time now. With my most recent project, I need to use wheels & tires from a model which are chromed. What are the preferred ways of painting over the chrome?

Long story short, I need to convert some chrome wheels to white "steel" wheels....

Thanks
