GI - Production Bikes GB 06

I'm in, well if you will tell me one thing. How exactly does the group build thing work? I mean, do you just start the build on the set date and then when your done, post pics of it in the specific thread? Or is there more to it that I have missed? I'm still in, I have been wanting to get another bike and this is a darn good reason to get one... hmmm... or two

Yup, that's exactly how it works.  Progress pics as well if you feel like sharing.  It's also nice to share ideas and interesting facts with the others who are doing the researches as well.  Mostly importantly I'd say it's about constant motivation and support from others (and of course, reasons to get more kits...).  Sometimes we just get too lazy or stressed and lose that inspiration and passion one once had with a build project after it started to drag on for too long. 

[by the way my girlfriend told me that she shipped out the item some time ago.  i've been everywhere the past month or so on business trips so she's in charge of the shipping duties.  =P ]

 I would be interested.  I wouldn't mind trying to build the duc 916 again.  It was one of the first models I built and it turned out rather horrible.

Let me know what I need to do.

Erik, get another 916 before March 1st and start building at your own pace then.  Are the 916's bodies carbon fiber?  My mom's friend gave me a picture of a black 916 and the body cowling looks like it has a weaved CF texture on it.  I will scan the picture in tomorrow so you guys can see it.

I know several of the race bikes I have looked at in person have CF race glass.  I do not believe the street versions are.  I'll take a look and see what I can find as far as color schemes go (not that Ducati has had a large variety to choose from), I've always been a fan of yellow.  I also cannot remember when the Ducs went to up side down forks.  IIRC the forks that came with the kit were the older style conventional forks.  I'll also need to dig up and see if they produced the different series (R, S etc).  I know the current models come in several packages, to include Marchensi wheels and Ohlins forks, I'll see if there were variants with the 916's.
I may not be able to get started until the end of March, if I bring in another kit my wife will have a fit.  I still have a Ducati Desmo and two RC211V's that need to be built.  I still have one RCV unopened, so if you know someone who would be interested in a trade let me know.

hehe, take your time on that.  as long as you get done by 2007, you can start any time... and of course .. quit any time though that's not kul...  you are still considered part of the GB as long as you are in even if it's just a plan.

I think it was the limited edition "Senna" version of the 916 that had the carbon fiber fairing. I'm not sure if the run of the mill (yeah, right) 916 plastic is ABS like Japanese bikes or fiberglass, but it's not carbon.

I think you can count me in. I have a few "civilian" bikes in the stash.

Sounds good, I am in for sure, but it seems there are going to be a lot of Ducatis, so I am going to pick something diffrent

only two out of 4 bikes are gonna be 916s... hehe.  i didn't say i was doing one.  though i have one in progress with some puttying done on the body n a another one still fresh in box...  it's a CBR400F for me, Tamiya's old kit.  i just loved the look of it when i first saw it and the gsx1100s when i first started building Tamiya kits when i was a kid.  (missing that RG250 walter wolf special which i utterly ruined... and it is discontinued...)

I would be in as well. Just started a Yamaha R1 tuner project. Would be fun to build together!

If we have a full year than here is my bike list

Ducati 916 (possible using dexter transkit)
Honda NR
Yamaha 750R

Dexter also makes aftermarket decals for exhausts so I may spruce up some of the bikes with aftermarket design.  I also need to locate clear tubing for the brake hoses (not sure what size to get).

Any other suggestions on making the bike better?

Kul, that makes 5 people.  Thanks Joel.  I will get the thread started ASAP on the GB forum.  I wish those guys from Scale Auto Mag's forum would come n see this.  Their motorcycle section is like... half dead... as well.

Hmmm... suggestions... i have none.  I was horrible at it and still am.  Ideas though, yea there is a bunch.  From what I have seen so far, without the help of expensive and limited in choices PE sets, one can,

replace all cables with fishing lines or AM cables such as those from modeler's.

aftermarket mesh hoses, clear oil tubes.

sand the tire to eliminate the middel seam.

cross-drill brake discs if required.  thin down brake discs.

future the wind shield.

AM or scratched bolts and screws.

stripped factory chrome replaced with alclad or model master's metallic paints. bare metal foil.

AM CF decals.

Even after that I gotta say cars and bikes still will cost less than those armor projects...

I have three alclad paints.  Chrome, steel and aluminum.  I do not think I am using the chrome or the aluminum correctly since my finish is rather dull (see my NSR500 pics in the GB thread, I used it on the frame and swing arm).  Any good tips for using these?  I am almsot tempted to use TS-17 for the paint on the frames, since I know the finish will probably look cleaner than what I am doing now.

Has anyone used the PE hose clamps?  I have found a set fairly cheap, and I was wondering if there has been a review.

I think andrew on the MotoGP GB suggested to use Silver Leaf from those Tamiya spray cans as the metalic pieces are much smaller so the finish is smoother.  As far as chrome is concerned, there is some emphasis on getting a very smooth primer coat using gloss black, I havent done any chrome parts yet since I have yet to strip them all off, my other ones used the (very nice looking!!) Tamiya factory plated chrome with some touch up using chrome silver.  I am though tempted to try Bare metal foil's chrome or ultra bright chrome on the CBR.  Will post results after I waste that 5 bucks.  =P

count me into guys not sure what one will make not sure what scale or what brand will let you know after been to lihs(local internet hobby shop)+what ever wife won't complain about(price wise)

On the subject of hose clamps and clear tube I've seen a few builds using PE clamps with good result. Renaissance does a nice set by the way. When it comes to clear tube I try to get tubes that is apprx 1 mm wide give or take a few 10ths of a mm, it doesn't show. More important is the inside meassurement, how wide is the hole so to speak. It's hard to get those hoses to stay on the fittings if too narrow. Sometimes I've cut the fitting and put a bit of solder instead. Works ok. Some tubes are really tough to bend, I worked with Model Factory Hiro tubes on my latest builds and they were crap when it came to that. I would recommend Modeler's or Sakatsu.

yea that sux.  well there is always the older model FLH and FXE from Tamiya in 1/6 .  and if you are lucky and deep in the pocket there is still that japanese only release of the fat boy.  [grrr... i reeeaaally want that kit.  but I settled with 3 aoshima made 1/12 yamaha V-Max.  saw it in person and that was just love at first sight.]  =P
