choices for a glue?
Posted by carguy on Sunday, July 16, 2006 11:43 PM
I have always used the Testor's "orange" glue for model building and have been very satisfied with it. I recently got a tube of the "blue" Testor's non- toxic glue in a yard sale car kit, and am wondering if other modeller's are satisfied with this Testor's product? The tube I have does not seem to stick as well, but then I am using it on a truck kit I mentioned in another post, and there is a lot of glue residue from another brand of glue, and the plastic of this kit seems a bit stiff or maybe brittle(?)... I realize plastic should not change but I wonder if it can change slightly with age? In other words, I have always liked the Testor's brand..... I know the truck kit is older....I wonder if maybe the glue is maybe old, too...  how does the Testor's blue compare to the orange, in your opinion?

The non-toxic stuff is crap, the orange is better but not by much. Try using a liquid such as Testor's Liquid or Tamiya Thin. The idea of these glues is that instead of bonding them together it actually melts the styrene to more or less permamently fuse them together.

Styrene can age and become brittle.

If the person who started the kit was using the same kinds of glues, try putting them in the freezer and chilling them. That may help disassembly.

So long folks!

The blue tubes are pretty awful.  You might have better luck using the paste we all had in first grade.Smile [:)]  I've transitioned from testors tubes to their liquids(I had bought a box when I was 12 and ran out recently), of course I've always used super glue and white glue as well.  I've worked on about six models with Testors Plastic Cement 3502.  There is definitely an appreciable different, no more strings flying around, globs pooling, and hardened tips that need poked through, resulting in a gush of glue.  I still use the tube for somethings, but I recommend switching to a liquid.

I tried some of Testors other tubes of cement and always came back to the "orange" tube. It actually melts the plastic and dries quicker than the other crap.

But after hearing about the liquid and no more struggling with the tube for a drop of glue, I just might try that. Wink [;)]

Gesh... all the things I learn here is really changing some of my old modeling ways.  Thumbs Up [tup]

Here's a couple of recent discussions about glues, which may be helpful.
