I asked my Dad about it, he isn't positive what it is but gave an educated guess.

He seems to think it is one of those items that they hand out when you "fill" your tank. During the 40's, 50's, and 60's it was common for gas stations to have different promotional items and gimmicks going on. The four leaf clover representing safe motoring after leaving with a full tank.

What was an automotive handout doing at an airport?
Maybe they handed them out to smaller aircraft...
Maybe someone just dropped it...
Maybe they held local auto drag racing at the airport (common back then), mixing avaition fuel with regular fuel was a trick...

But to really find out, contact Gulf.  Wink [;)]

Well... so much for Dad's words of wisdom with age thing LOL.

Good luck!

Definitely not a geocaching item - the College Park Airport is a National Historic Site and any kind of digging without a permit is strictly prohibited. This token or whatever it is was about 15cm under ground level, and I'm sure it was just randomly dropped. I just think it'd be interesting to be able to figure out about when it might have been dropped (at least the decade) and perhaps if it was a promotion for a automotive or airplane product of Gulf's.

Depending on its paticular surroundings (open space, next to a sign, etc) and how far down it was buried in the earth, it may have been a leaving for the hobby of Geocaching where a specific item is left, its GPS coordinates given on the hobby forum, and others are to search for this item, record finding it, etc etc.

Most likely it was just dropped there many many years ago. Still cool either way!

Need help IDing an automotive "artifact"
Posted by mfsob on Friday, August 4, 2006 8:27 AM

I'm a ship and airplane guy but am hoping for help from any auto trivia buffs to identify an artifact that was found while we were excavating last year at College Park Airport in Maryland for a course I took.

It's some kind of promotional item for Gulf Oil, a thin white cardboard disk 1 5/16-inches in diameter, with a four-leaf clover on one side (it appears to be a real one) and on the other side is the Gulf  logo and the words, "Keeps your car working like a charm." It appears to be laminated. Below are links to the artifact, since I can never get the stupid [IMG] tag to work:

Any idea what year or decade this artifact is from would be very helpful!
