It's not so much that the kit is "valuable" it is of value to the purchaser. If you look at the final winner, they were from the UK so converted to Pound Sterling it is less than half that amount with the exchange rate. It all depends on availability and the "got to have it" factor of the buyer(s). For instance there is the exact same kit up for sale for $9.99 in white boxed by Renwal, however there are no bids. I agree with you eBay can be ridiculously over priced and bidding gets way out of hand. It's the factors I previously mentioned that seem to drive the price up.

You've got to keep checking back for other sellers.  A couple of months ago, I was looking for a kit of a 1920's era Mack truck.  One guy had one that had been bid up to over $80.  I think it finally sold for $130.  The same buyer of that kit also was bidding on other 20's Macks and going nuts.  Well, I found one he didn't see and got it for $23.  A day later, I got 2 unopened kits of the F-150 Ford Dually Pickup in one package for about $30 AND a kit of the F-600 Ford stake-side truck for $18.  So, you can see that patience is sometimes rewarded.
