AMT/Ertl '69 Chevelle kits...
Posted by buildit on Saturday, February 3, 2007 8:04 PM

I was just browsing around the 'net earlier and noticed that AMT/Ertl has two different kits of the '69 Chevelle SS.  One is labeled something like "RestoRod" and the the other is called a 2-in-1.  Kit numbers are 31792 and 38376.  Anyone familiar with these kits?  I'm wondering what, if any, differences there are between the two and if one is of any better quality.

I had built a kit of this car many years ago but have no recollection of who the manufacter was.  It was built in the image of the real '69 Chevelle SS396 I used to drive in my younger days.  Have no idea what happened to the first kit and I'd like to build another someday.  I'm starting a stockpile it seems, because I just recently picked up two other kits...a '64 Galaxie and a '73 Mach 1...to build to represent cars I've had.

Only seventeen more different kits to find...LOL

I don't have any personal experience with either of the kits, but I can share some info that was passed along to me from my distributor.

They are basically the same kit (from the same mold).
The 31792 was from the earlier production run, the 38376 is a newer release.

If I were you, I'd opt for the 31792 as chance of details being crisper are better than in the 38376. I'm not sure to what extent the extra customizing parts might be different.

Wish I could have been of more help.

Good luck on your search for the remaining 17. Wink [;)]

31792 has bad underside detail. the front suspension is non existant, they use a plate and pin so the wheel spins. no upper and lower a-frame, no springs, nothing. and the driveshaft is molded into the frame, rather than an additional piece. everything else is okay though. if you want it just for outside looks, go for it. here is what I did to the interior of mine... which is going through a modlehaus 68 conversion.

I flocked the floor black and used the bench seat in the rear from an amt 69 olds... the amt velle kit comes with a bench for the back and buckets for the front

here is the engine with the frame from the 69 olds 442

Thanks for input!  I had a feeling that neither of these kits would be considered "excellent", based on what I've seen and read lately about AMT.  Since I haven't been able to locate any other '69 Chevelle kits besides these AMTs I've decided to go with the 31792.  It will just have to do.

I'd like to do something for a bench seat in this kit as well, since my original car was a bench-seat, 4-speed car.  Guess I better start scavenging for something that is workable.  Pics look good!  I like the plug wires...they look great!
