You can achieve the effect that you are looking for by doing the following:
After painting the body with the correct color and the decals
have been applied, if any, overspray with clear flat. When the
clear flat has dried completely, burnish it with a piece of old
tee-shirt or flannel. You can achieve everything from a soft
glow to an almost glossy finish. Just like many of the Bugs
that I've seen at various vintage races. Don't forget to lighten
the color slightly to simulate time and sun bleaching.
As an aside, I built this same kit way back in the 1960's. Since I didn't own an airbrush at the time and couldn't find the correct color in a spray can, I just oversprayed the bare plastic with clear gloss. Although the color is a little dark, it still looks pretty good today.
