Mustang Poppy Red
Posted by A. Iosue on Friday, March 16, 2007 4:43 PM

Hi, I want to paint a mustang with the original poppy red but I cannot find this color. Where can I find this color or how can I prepare it?. Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

A. Iosue.

If you know what year the Poppy Red was used, you can look up the Ditzler/PPG paint code here - AutoColorLibrary. Then check with your local automotive parts stores or paint supply shops. Some, like NAPA, can have a spray can filled for you or possibly a pint made up.

 Good luck

'65-'66 Mustang color-POPPY RED

'68-'70 Mercury color-CALYPSO CORAL

Same color-differnt years. Thought two chances to find it may help.

Poppy Red is a red with a good deal of orange in it...go to www.cars-on-line.com for a set of really good photos of a '65 Mustang GT 2+2 in poppy red.  When I built a replica of an old girlfriend's Mustang in that color, I used a Testor's enamel that was close, if maybe a little too red  (Italian Red, maybe?).  Anyway, think orange-ish red, and you're there.

Poppy Red - paint code 3
Ditzler (PPG) #60449

You can probably mix this color yourself.
Start with a small amount of orange and add a few drops at a time of red.
Or add black slowly to darken the orange.

It looks pretty close to Testors: Competition Orange S-1628 or Floquil: GTW Morency Orange 414356.

Try looking for the painting touch ups at the local auto parts store.

Not a problem A. Iosue, [ assuming they're still around ].MCW Automotive finishes outa Burlington,No. Carolina sells airbrush ready & most popular auto finishes for modelers. They have differant size jars, smallest a little bigger than Tamiya paints.Poppy red for a '65' mustang is P.N.# 6434 ,aerosol for it is #2703,& listed as "close match".My experience with them has been excellant in matching,But try & find out factory color of primer to assure it.I last ordered from them about 3 Yrs. ago,so Fax them a request [ they don't give they're ph.# ,nor a website last time I checked ].Fax is # 1-336-228-0240 .  Good luck,  rudedog
