1/24th A/C Cobra Kit

Monogram made a 427 at one point, this one is on Ebay:

Fujimi have a 427 with engine detail like this item from Hong Kong on Ebay (so expensive):

One would assume that the Fujimi one will make it to America at some point if it is a new kit.

I live in the UK, so I have no real idea on availability. I do have the Monogram kit though.

This could conceivably be the kit that AMT issued but I am not sure.

Those look to be the only 427's though someone may know of others.

Surprisingly, there are relatively few current 1/24 scale models of the amazing AC Cobra - and the ones that have been made are fairly ordinary.
The Fujimi kit isn't anywhere near as good as you'd expect, having built many of their other offerings, I was disappointed. It's better than the others, though.
The Monogram 427 S/C isn't bad, about on par with normal Monogram kits.
AMT made a 3-in-1kit of the 289 a very long time ago, with custom chrome and different wheels. It's old and poorly detailed.
I think the MPC and AMT 1/16 427 are one and the same. I've got one, and it's not too bad - needs some serious superdetailing because of it's large scale.
I've got one of those 1/43 scale Monogram 289 AC Cobra kits. It's without question the best of the lot, although a 289 body, not the more aggressive 427.
Regrettably, Monogram only made a relatively small number of them, along with the 1/43 1967 Corvette convertible. The kits were absolute gems - I can hardly bring myself to build them..............

I've had a very close look at these cars - they are definately NOT cheap fiberglass look alikes. These are truly high performance sports cars (NOT built on a Pinto chassis........) and are simply incredible. The attention to detail and the build quality is truly amazing - what else would you expect for $87,000 US dollars.
If I had the disposable income, I'd knock on Mr. Darnell's door tomorrow morning and choose my favorite color..........

I have those Monogram 1/43 289 and Corvette. Never got as far as building them.

Academy did a 289 as well (I suspect just a curbside though I am sure someone can enlighten me on that).

The MPC/Airfix 427 (Mk III) Cobra kit is a good starting point. Some glaring errors, it is supposed to be an S/C model but does not have the oil cooler scoop on the lower front and the Halibrand wheels are both the same same depth (NOT width) front and rear. All can be fixed with some scratch building and kit bashing.

The old AMT 289 Cobra 1/25 kit is really better than many realize-good detail, chassis detal way beyond anything else released in 1963. The kit best represents an early 260 Cobra, worm and sector steering and the early "flathead" Cobra emblems and no side vents.

More on the Cobras:

Monogram released three versions of the 1/24 427 Cobra;
427 S/C
427 "street"
and the Essex Wire 427 competition car.

All are good kits but the street car has several fatal flaws, the kit has wire wheels, no 427 cars left Shelby with wires...they did ship from the AC factory with wire but these were used as "slave" wheels and were returned to AC for re-use. Also while the kit has prototypical correct non-scooped hood and bumpers with over riders, it has side pipes which were only on the S/C & comp cars. Comes with a soft top and the correct dual 4 barrell carbs.

The Essex wire kit includes different tires and the shorty windscreen along with other racing parts.

Another lesser know 427 kit was released by "Sunny" in the USA although inside is a postcard for Minicraft, I assume they distributed this kit here. Upon opening the box anyone who has built any of the AMT 260/289 Cobra releases will recognize the contents....this is a total knock-off of the AMT kit only with a 427 type body. The suspension is the incorrect for a 427 transverse leaf spring system and the small block Ford engine! WAY WRONG!!! Once more, close but no cigar.

If only Fugimi would do an enthusiasts series of Tamiya would do a Cobra, we would have the basis to go nuts with aftermarket stuff....

The Monogram "Ultimates" 1/43 289 Cobra kit is an excellent kit, better panle gaps on the hood than on some large scale kits I have seen! A nice fret of photoetch stuff included makes it easy to build a real nice replica.

Maybe Accurate Minatures will take another venture in auto models.....

Guys ! I think I read in FSM about Fugimi comin out with a 427 Cobra Kit . . . . One of the Japanese manufacturors . . . Who or how would I go about finding it ? ? What is it Hit an Miss ? ? ?

I wish I could find that MPC Kit I was tellin you about ? ? There's gotta be somebody who has em ? ? I have a Body but I Lost the rest of the Kit in a frantic Move to the east coast

I have read that the Fugimi kit is nothing special. It is available from HobbyLink Japan as well as a photoetched detail set for Cobras.

The 1/16 Cobra kit is now released under the AMT brand and has been on the hobby shop shelves, should be available on line also.

It doesn't help you much right now but Revell is supposed to re-release their 427 S/C version sometime this coming year. Here's a list of upcoming Revell releases that Tom Carter(owner of HH) posted at the Hobby Heaven message board last week. If you can't wait, there's always ebay. Just be prepared for sticker shock...
