1970 Dodge Charger 500

a '71 Daytona/Superbird? Really????? If there are pictures out there, i would love to see em! Google doesn't seem to be much help....

And Ford got it shut down, huh? Seems i owe the blue oval a rather overdue nasty-gram!

That's the 1969 model. They put the roof into production a year ahead of the Daytona and Superbird. The roof is not off a Roadrunner/Superbee, but a one up deal. The 1970 Carger 500 used a regular production roof line. Might add here that there was also a 1971 Superbird / Daytona in the works before Ford and NASCAR got it killed off. It was even slicker than the 1970 model. I saw pics of it yesterday afternoon down at my brother's place. There is a car that runs at Bonneville that uses a stock 1970 Daytona body (#1001) that has run nearly 240mph with a stock displacement engine and two four barrels.

Wasn't planning on doing a charger modified for racing, but more or less kinda an example of what i want the 1/1 scale to look like (one of these days) and it may be the only time i will never have to worry about references

   And i have to agree that i loved the way the 69 looked. I thought it was the best looking one out of all the 2nd generation chargers. But with the popularity of the Dukes these days, a 69 kit is easy to come by and are in no short supply. Went on Ebay and i even saw a 68 kit in the Dick Landy color scheme. Guess i'll keep looking though. Was just hoping something was available. After i finish my aircraft builds, i'd like to "change gears" (pun intended)

Ah, but you are so right. It was a 1969 Charger! I spoke with my brother awhile ago, and he did a complete memory jog for me. I thought that it was 1970. Getting long in the tooth you know. Brother did tell me that if your doing a race car to be sure and get the engine right. The street version used a standard intake, but the race car was shipped with two different intakes. I always liked the way the 69 car looked.

The '69 500 has the rear window flush, and the grille flush as well, without the characteristic hidden headlights (all 2nd generation chargers had 4 headlights) On the '70, the roof is the same. Outside of a few factory options, there is really not much difference between that and a base model charger. On ebay, i had seem a '70 R/T resin conversion kit, but the R/T has the door scoops along with the badges. Not exactly what i was looking for.

I've never seen one. I used to know a guy that had one, and dove it everyday. The roof is unique, and not really one off a Superbee. Also the grill is unique too. You could start out with a Daytona Charger roof, and adapt it to the regular Charger body. The front fenders are different on a Daytona or a Superbird that the regular fenders. For the life of me I cannot remember if the 500 had two or four headlights. I'm thinking they just used two small diameter ones like the 1965 hemi cars did. If you have in particular questions about this body let me know as my brother has all the factory data.
