Hood Insulation
Posted by lizardqing on Sunday, October 19, 2003 9:02 PM
Does anyone have anything that they use for undeerhood insulation material that is readily available. I've seen stuff online being sold for that but I'm looking for something more along the lines that might be laying around the house or the loca wal-mart. Thanks.

That sounds exactly what I am wanting. My wife knows what you are talking about but also don't know the exact name either. Thanks.

Give you a hint on glueing these too get some Aleenes Craft glue...its a whit glue that dries clear and can wash up with water...works better than elmers or super glue. Also depending on what color you want the insulation to be...I know most is black but Ive done some to match the cars color....save some time and use spray paint...or an air brush do a light coat let it dry fully and do more light coats...kind of like a build up technique. Cotton is absorbent...so let everything dry well to see how much has absorbed before you go on. Another thing I have heard of but haven't tried is dropping some RIT dye in a ziploc...with just enough water as needed and dying them. You could do more than one this way and I was told this gives it more of a "realistic" look.....Havent tried it as of yet though.
Hope this helps some,
Chris

I found this tip on scaledreams.com.

I have found a great way to make headliners, hood insulation, or blower blankets. First, obtain a plain, white, non-quilted paper towel (not too thick!). Lay this on or over the part you want covered, then liberally wet it with a mix of water (30%) and white glue (70%). Let this dry for a full day, gently remove from the part, trim to size, paint with a flat paint, and then reattach to the model!!

Good luck!

Thanks guys, should get the TA looking better. Probally try the headliner trick to. Trying to get this one to the best car build I've ever done and those should kick it up a notch or two.

Hey Chris I found the bag of the wifes makeup scrubbing pads. Huge bag 1,000 pads@wally world for like $3.00. Equate Cotton Scrubbing Pads come in a blue and clear bag located(varies from store to store) but should be near the cosmetics or the Q-tips...if not there try near the make up. These pads also maybe a lil thicker than you want them I usually take a hobby knife and try to cut in the middle on the end of the pad all the way across and seperate a few layers...until I get the thickness I desire.

Thanks Chris I'll get my wife to pick some up next time she goes to walmart. I think she would be more knowledgeable of the cosmetics area than myself.
