Motocycle Cowling Painting Help
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, October 20, 2003 11:48 PM
Hi Forum Readers,

I would like to know what others do when it comes to painting a motorcycle cowling.

When painting my car's brake and headlights I paint them from the inside. I find that it makes it look nicer and more realistic. With this I got to thinking that it would hold true for the cowling. The cowling is clear.

So what do you think?

Any help will be great!

Hi !!!

I use Tamiya's clear colors to paint brake lights, turn signals and other clear parts. It really gives it that realistic look......... you can also take your favorite color and thin them out and use an airbrush to apply the color, this works ok too...

hope this helps.....

I don't think it would look right. The fairings an 1:1 motorcycles are all painted on the outside.

Thanks for your help guys!

I thought that it might look funny if I painted from the inside.

The cowling is clear because you can display it painted or keep it clear to show off the details.

I like mine painted.

Thanks again!

Yeah, I'd paint it. I have the Tamiya Bimota Tesi 1D and I just built it with the cowling on one side. That way, when you look at it from the left, you can see the engine details, etc. From the right, you see the full fairing and decals, etc.

Dss902,
I'd just paint the fairing. Use a good quality flat white enamel as a primer, that way you can apply a very thin coat to start with. Then, apply the next color only thick enough to give the depth of color you need and no more. Don't worry about the shine or gloss of the paint yet. If that's the final color, apply Future for a gloss, then decals, then Future again.
If you need to mask for another color, do that before you decal and overcoat with Future. This way, you end up with the maximum color depth with the thinnest possible paint thickness.

Wow

I just picked up 2 new tips!

I really like the paint 1/2 of the cowling tip!

That is what I am going to try...thanks again.

For the Future polish do I thin it the same as any accrilc? Or is it 1:1?

Future airbrushes strait out of the bottle with NO thinning required. Ues Windex to clean-up. Check out the Future topics in the Painting & Airbrushing section.
