Question on roll cages..
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, February 18, 2003 10:43 AM
One of the models I'm going to be building comes with a roll cage inside the car...

Which brings me to my question...as a current drag racer...I know it's required that roll cages have padding. Most people use close cell foam padding available from summit. But I have yet to see a model that incorperates this...

So, I wonder how some heat shrink (since it comes colored and in various sizesand cheap...especially at swap meets) used in conjunction with the zip ties (that are used for most of these race cars to hold the close cell foam to teh roll cages) that are available from The Model Car garage to give it that finishing touch...

Ideas, comments, questions?

Sorry I got carried away...

I was wondering if anyone had done roll cage padding, and if so...how?

Secondly...would teh heat shrink wrap with zip ties just look odd?

I have never done it, actualy never thought about it, but that would look great. As far as the zip ties go, i would just make they look to scale.

For those who don't know what I'm talking about...

Here's a few examples...these are done in a 4x4, but the padding is all the same...

you know, you wouldnt even need foam. Just put some vinal type material around it. and then use something for the zip ties.
even red duct tape, or red electricians tape would look cool. I have used flat red paint, it looked good also. Im still racking my brain for what to use for the zip ties.

Here's a link to some zip ties that are available...

I've sent them a question as to whether they are molded plastic or decals...I can't tell...

Just out of curiosity, is that 4X4 a tornado chase vehicle? I'm converting Tamiya's Jeep Cherokee Limited to a tornado chase vehicle (like "Twister," though I don't think they used Cherokees in that film), and I was planning to install a roll bar; these pictures are a perfect reference. But the video camera and all sure make it look like a tornado chaser!

ROWDYMON, i would be willing to bet that they are molded plastic, otherwise they wouldnt be on the 'tree' like that.

No it's not a tornado chase vehicle. Alot of the 'Extreme' Off Roaders have started doing video taping and showing their footage off. With the advent of digital vid camera's...it's made it a real possibility.

Some of these guys are just NUTS. I think i'ld rather chase tornadoes than try and climb rocks like they do...ROFL.

IF the pictures help that's awesome. I thought about building a rock climbing dio for some off roaders I know...get some super suspension travel going...

Guess we'll have to see how my modeling comes out eh?

Thanks for the reply; sorry it took me so long to respond to your reply, but I don't have a computer, so I use one at a university library. I'm done with the chassis and engine of the tornado chase vehicle; I built those primarily out-of-the-box. Now I'm getting ready to detail the interior, and this will be the meat of the project! Jim

You can use masking tape. Roll to desired thickness and use black thread to simulate the ties.
This is what I did when I build model nascar stock cars
