Far west trucking ford aeromax 106 truck and trailer kit "WIP"
Posted by modelmaniac1967 on Friday, February 15, 2008 5:51 AM

Hello all. I have had this kit for years and decided to break it out and build it. Only problem is I havent built a big rig since the early '80s. I have a lot of research ahead of me and thought I would ask a few questions here in the forum. 1.) The instructions say to paint the frame of the trailer silver. I know trailers are aluminium to save on weight, shouldnt it be aluminium not silver? 2.) Does any one know of a good semi truck website that has good reference material?  3.) Has anyone else built this same kit? If you have any photos of the finished product? 4.)The decal for the trailer is about 2 feet long by 5" high, has anyone placed a decal this big before with out it shattering into little pieces? I have my work cut out for me but want to see this kit finished at long last. Any help or ideas would be most appreciated. Sorry for writing a short story!

I work at a warehouse. I can snap some pictures of trailer chassis and post if you need some. or you can check out this website for utility trailer. they were next door to where my warehouse use to be located in Utah.

Decals this big (click on pic to enlarge)

Are not really a problem as long as you take your time and use plenty of setting solutions. I use microsol/set.

Most of the OTR Trailers I have worked on had metal Frames with the rest of the trailer being natural Aluminum finish. The Frames were originally a semi- gloss black. But usually looked  grayish due to road grime.

I'm just travelling through, usually in the aircraft forum, but I've spent some time around trucks.  In fact I have a lot of my model collection stored in a refrigerated trailer quite like the one you will build.  It really is a frameless trailer, meaning the sides of the trailer give it the shear strength, there is nothing underneath except crossmembers under the floor and a short subframe that the landing gear is attached to, and another subframe that the rear suspension and axles attach to.  I've seen these parts in any color, it depends on the color the operator chooses, really.  Black or grey are both common.  The box on the trailer is aluminum like you suspect, usually it isn't painted if the trailer is made of aluminum as is indicated by the ribs.  Many freight trailers now have composite sides, and any color is likely.  Good luck with it.

Still working on this kit on and off between the stage coach i have been building in another thread (still plan to finish that one) but here is a shot of the trailer of the aero max under construction...

Big decal isn't as hard as i thought it would be to install, seems that they made it thicker than a usual decal but that might just be my imagination...

Revell did a model of this truck

The whole of the truck was covered in decal. They've actually done 3 so far, This one, a Renault Magnum with trailer called "Ice Truck" and a Scania with trailer "Friedenfels". All were totally decalled. I haven't had the courage to try one yet.

I like your trailer by the way.
