Ok, I'm not that up on Mustang kits but I asked at a Model car site I'm on and was told the AMT '67 Mustang Fastback would be a better choice. '67 and '68 shared the same body style, so there isn't much difference between them.

yeah they do seem much more similar!  thanks for the tip! but,if ever there were differences..what would they be? the 67 compared to the 68?

and btw, what other 1/25 car kits have the same mag wheels as the 68 bullitt mustang? thanks!!

It would be easier to use the 1967 GT kit or wait to some time this spring for the 68 fastback GT to be released.

I have to full size 68s so I know the differences between the years and models.  There would be just too much you would have to change on the Shelby model.

Actually it would be Revell, they have been doing some of their diecasts as plastic kits, and it is expected they will do the same with the '68 Mustang. I had not noticed this on their '08 line up but sounds like this spring from Scode68's post. They did the same thing with their diecast '58 Impala which has received positive reviews.

If that kit is the reissue of the AMT 1968 release of the 68 GT-500 it may include the 68 non-shelby parts. If so, it would build up pretty well. There is also an AMT 67 GT-350 and an AMT 67 Mustang GT that are newer tools. These share many components, the biggest differences being the nose and tail pieces. These have nicely chassis and drivetrains, much nicer than the 68 GT-500. The 67 GT would build up into a very nice 68 Bullit. They both have 289 small block engines; the Bullit car had a 390 big block.

so in your honest opinion what should i go for to get the best bullitt car? the AMT 67 m.fastback or wait for the 68 revell? plus where do i get the wheels for the bullitt car?

thanks again!

Just my opinion, but when I get an itch to build a particular car such as the Bullitt, I wouldn't wait if there is a suitable kit and parts available. In your case I'd go with the AMT 67 GT and grab a big block from an AMT Fairlane, 60 Ford, or a Polar Lights Ford or Mercury. The detailing on the chassis is better on the AMT than on the Revell kit that will probably be used as the basis for the 68. For wheels, try the 60 Custom Starliner, I think those are pretty close. That would give you your engine too.

I can't really see the wheels on the Bullitt Mustang but this is the AMT '67 Mustang, pretty much a straight out of the box build except for the decals and cop equipment. This was one of my first builds when I got back into the hobby 5 or 6 years ago and was having a little fun with a what if build. They didn't really use them but if anyone used Mustang's in the 60's I figured Texas would have. Smile [:)]

The Monopgram 1932 Ford 3 window coupe has a nice set of American Mag wheels that would be correct for the Bullit Mustang. Also note that the 2008 Bullit Mustang is the same collor of green as the original 1968 Bullit Mustang. There was a place that was doing small bottles and spray cans of original paint colors for cars from the 50s and 60s. Does anyone know if they are still available?

AMT made a 1960 Starliner kit, but I do not know if it has a set of American Mag wheels in it. The wheels on the Bullit Mustang had black center spokes (5). The Starliner kit does have a Ford big block engine. If I remember correctly the engine color for the 68 390 CID engine is the darker of the two Ford Engine blues.

I just checked my stash and the AMT version of the 60 Starliner Custom, the purple version, has American "mags" that will work. The stock version with the black car on the box, only has stock parts. The center and spokes of the rims should be dark metallic almost black. I think gunmetal ought to do. You'll also have to install the side marker lights, since the 67 doesn't have them.  With the custom kit there is a 3x2 bbl and a dual 4bbl. engine options. Both have the oval chrome air cleaner. It may be the most detailed FE out there. They never specify in the movie how the engine is set up. The Bulllitt car has most of the chrome badges and the grill's horse and bar removed so it would "safe" to assume that the Bullitt character might have installed some hopped up engine pieces as well. The AMT 68 GT-500 doesn't come with the stock Mustang body parts like I thought. Be sure to use the more recent AMT 67 Mustang kit since it has the inner fender shock towers that the GT-500, which is based on the older tooling, doesn't have. Hope this helps!

Almost forgot, the grill on the 68 is different than the plain 67 grill used on the Bullitt Mustang. Here are a few shots of my 67's.

This is the AMT 67 GT-350:

and here is the 67 Mustang:

I would agree that it would be safe to assume a hotter than stock set up, perhaps not by the story but in th actual movie car definately. I ran across a book on movie cars several years ago and it had a pretty good section on Bullitt. The thing that stuck with me was how fast the Chargers were. The Charger was stock with a 440 or a 426 Hemi (I've forgotten now) but the Mustang had everything done to wring out every bit of power it could produce and the driver of the Charger still had to go really light on the gas just to keep the Mustang in the scene. Plus Steve McQueen and the director were major gearheads and they had a car to play with. Big Smile [:D]
