Hey Auto Guys...Need your help!!
Posted by mark983 on Tuesday, April 8, 2008 10:59 PM

Wandering over from Aircraft because I'm working on a special project.  My father in-law's favorite car is a 2001 RUF RGT.  He purchased one and races it in club events.  (Must be nice to have that kind of money)  Anyway...because he's impossible to shop for around his birthday, I want to re-create one of his races in a diorama and give it to him for his 60th birthday.  Anyone know who might produce or sell a kit of this car.  Here is a picture of one like it I grabbed off the internet.  Any help would be much appreciated!

Kinda looks like a cross between a Porsche 911 and a Mazda RX7 drifter....  I'm not familiar with RUF.  Any more info would be great.

Here's a couple links to a pair of Aoshima RX-7 kits that look very similar

I was just talking about Porsches too today. Gonna trade the bike for one actually, that or an STi ... decisions decisions ... (and I do auto-x/club track days and volunteer at ICSCC club races, lol.)

Here's another kit that may be a starting point.  It'd need a different nose section of course.

I agree with Dr your best bet is the 911 GT3 by Tamiya. Is that his car in the picture? I believe the tamiya kit is a 98 GT3 so you can look a Renaissance to see if any of there trans kits can get you a little closer to his car.

Hope you do a WIP when start the project

There wouldn't be too much to add to the body if you use the GT3 from Tamiya as the starting point (that is the car the RUF started with). You would have to tweak the front clip a little, mainly in the intakes and the front splitter/spoiler. It looks like the fender flares would need to be scratched, but that would be easy, only some sheet styrene, no real body work. The mirrors could be made from the kit parts, they look a little smaller on the RUF. The spoiler can be found in some of the Japanese "Detail Up" add on kits, made by Aoshima, Fujimi, and possibly Tamiya. The changes that RUF made to the car are mostly in the innards, lighter engine, better suspension, more power, etc. They really only added a body kit and wheels to the outside. I'm not too sure about the interior, although it shouldn't be too hard to modify the kit parts.

Thanks everyone for your help.  Here are the actual pictures of his car plus the pink and green one his wife races.  Thinking about modeling that one as well.  I think it's a Porsche 914.

On the RUF car there, I believe those wheels are available from the aftermarket through Aoshima.  Tamiya might have some as well.  It is trivial to convert the Aoshima wheels to work with Tamiya kits.  Also easy to do the reverse, but a little bit more involved, althuogh not much.
