Flocking?

lol no chris......... chris i tried sifting this stuff and putting it into a pepper shacker, and what i found, is that as soon as it sits for a couple of minutes, it clumps right back up again..... i just sift what i need when i need it....

I might try taking some to work and running it through a fine sieve. We have them so fine you can't see through them, but I imagine that would be a little to small. Thanks for the welcome, I did'nt ask so many questions that I sound like a new guy did I?

What i do, is this......... I put the flocking in a sieve (very fine mesh) and use my finger to push the flocking threw.... (moveyour finger back and forth in a rubbing manner, with moderate pressur...) it will come out very very fine... then i gently press the flocking in the the paint or glue...( i use paINT INSTEAD OF WHITE GLUE)

Ok I just tried it again and had what looks to better results. It still don't look great but I guess that will come with practice. The paint job did'nt come out as i was wanting either. Looks like I'll just go on with the build and hope for better next time. I think this is why I like armor better, I can make something look abused alot better. Thanks for the help.

Hmmm, I just flocked the tub in my 68 camaro and it was perfect.All I did was use one of those disposable epoxy brushes and Water Wash up Elmers glue.
I put a descent amount of glue over everything i wanted flocked,then used the brush to spread it out evenly but not too thick with the glue.
Then i used a strainer held over the tub(part being worked on) and poured the flock in the strainer, Then i tapped the strainer over the tub.I then let it sit for maybe 5 mins then turned it over a tapped the tub to get out all loose flock.I then gave it some more time to sit,maybe about 15 mins or a lil less,dont remember.I then looked closely to see if there any bumps or blimishes.then i carefully used the end of my finger and very lightly padded it down to a consistant and uniform flattness...so to say.and also make sure before you flock to paint that area the color of the flocking.Hope this helps...mine did come out quiet nicely for the 2nd time ever to use this stuff.

Allright, I tried the stuff out. I used Model Masters and to put it bluntly, it turned out like crap. I thought it was fined down enough and behold it was real clumpy. No way it would come out of a pepper shaker or sieve. So any ideas on how to make this stuff work? It basically looked like a dog with the mange. Really would like it to turn out nice.

As a variation to replicate the swede effect on some seats and steering wheels I paint the object and then sprinkle talcum powder on it straight away. The powder absorbs the paint rapidly. Blow off any surplus and the effect is just right. I was also reading somewhere recently but can't find it now where someone used "desert storm sand paint" in the ration of 1 part to 2 parts of the colour of the seat. Anyone heard of "desert storm sand paint"?

hi littlemo, nice tip about using the paint instead of elmers, i'll have to keep that in mind as i have not used flocking yet myself.a tip i guess i can give , i did make some floor mats out of masking tape once, i got the piece as i wanted and then added another on top, painted flat gray(the interior was kind of a matte gray) and it looked pretty nice.

Thanks Ron and Randy, saved me from having to ask. i'm about to try the stuff out myself. I just got to figure out how to get the huge mold marks off the floor boards. Real bad place to have those, no room to work.

the only thing i do different, is i use paint instead of glue, seems to work fine..... and with paint, you can have millions of different color combos....

I just recently started using flocking, and if done properly looks great!!!

What is you ask???? It's finely ground material, usually comes in some sort of tube, and usually comes in a wide assortment of colors... I use the ones from Detail Master (because thatis the brand my LHS carries).

Acording to the directions you would put white glue,(llike Elmer's) on part you want to flock, then using either a S/P shacker or sifter (the thing your mom uses to get the chunks out of flour when she bakes, i got my at a dollar store) and sprinkle it over the part with the glue, then lighty press on the flock so it sticks and you get better coverage, wait till it dries, then turn the part over and tap of the excess.......
