"Ol Yeller" Junk Yard Dog '61 Starliner
Posted by mitchum on Tuesday, June 3, 2008 9:40 PM

When the old timers and factory drivers were trying to beat Nelson Stacy before the '61 Southern 500 even started, they told him all about how newcomers would need oxygen before the race was over and how tough "the Lady in Black" was on rookies and Fireball Roberts said that he couldn't believe that Stacy's Ford didn't have power steering.

All that stuff fell on the deaf ears of a former tank driver for Patton that chased Rommel's Afrika Corps all over the desert. By the time the race was over Fireball was in the pits getting oxygen himself and his relief driver Marvin Panch was watching Stacy's yellow Ford pull into victory lane after having run him down and pass him in the closing laps.

I always thought that was one of the prettiest racing Fords ever so when I found a mint '61 Starliner I couldn't wait to scrape off the chrome side trim and yank out the seats. After thoroughly ruining a collector's item, this is what I wound up with, just another Ol' Redneck Race Car!

Thanks for the history lesson Mitchum.  I always enjoy them-racing was 'different' back then.

Why is this a collectors item? If so I've got 4 of them waiting in the wings for their turn. Maybe I should put them away?

Because, to the best of my knowledge, AMT hasn't made this kit since 1961. They did a reissue of the convertible in the late '60's or early seventies and the Club Victoria hardtop a few years ago as a Blueprinter Special, but I don't think they ever re-released the Starliner kit. To answer your question, if your kits are original plastic and not resin repops, then yes they are a collector's item. The recent kit was a '60

Same roof but different body panels, grill and bumpers.

Mine are AMT Starliner kits with a seperate frame, not the club coupe and I haven't had them very long. Maybe a year. Not resin. They do have the chrome trim where yours doesn't. What company made yours. It looks fantastic!!! Yours looks like a 60 not a 61. I know a 61 resin kit is avaiable. That is a 60 front end. Does the back have round tailights? if so you have a very odd kit because that is without a doubht a 60 front end.

Didn't mean to cloud the issue. The blue one is just to show the difference between the '60 and the '61. The yellow one is a '61 and has round tailights with the little straight fin that starts at the door handle. . The grills are different and the bodies are too. The blue '60 is done from the recent kit like yours but the yellow '61 is done from an original AMT 3-n-1 from 1961.

Ok, I see now. For some reason I didn't get the other picture the other day. You are right that is a collector piece!!! Very nice. My bad. Do they have rear windows? I can't tell?

They have rear windows (great BIG ones. LOL) with some of the first straps to keep them from being sucked out on the superspeedways. Nascar ran full windows including roll up side windows then. They are both Grand National (what is now Sprint Cup) division  cars.
