AT-ST

AT-ST

This was lots of fun.  I went with a khaki color simply because I thought it would look cool, and give the final product a unique look and feel.

The project is primarily made form styrene.  Fabric was used forthe bedrolls/supply tarps, and I added a hinged storage container the back of the central body for things like weapons and supplies.  This was born from elements that I always enjoyed about toys when I was a kid...I always used battery compartments as storage spaces  :)

Detailing the back was fun.  The cooling fans were particularly tricky:

The storage containter:

Its difficult to see the detail that I added to the c0ckpit, but I love the fact that its there...I feel it adds a certain richness to the final product.

The AT-AT driver is the most appropriate figure I had to display with this thing...and he sure is a goofy looking figure:

One thing that I'm really proud of is that I managed to engineer two points of articulation beyond the ball jointed head.  The legs have mobility at the top where they connect with the body, allowing some extremely limited posing:

Leg and bottom detailing:

And an outside shot:

Let me know what you think, and thanks for looking

Wow! That is some serious scratch building! Is it scaled for the 3" size action figures?

F is for FIRE, That burns down the whole town!

U is for URANIUM... BOMBS!

N is for NO SURVIVORS...

Dude, you are totally amazing!Bow [bow] You did a great job with the interior and the outside does look good in kahki. Another paint scheme that might look cool also is a wookie hunter AT-ST from The Force Unleashed. You can get a good pic from Wizards of the Coast who make Star Wars minis. Now you need to do an AT-AT!

The force is with this one!

Sign - Ditto [#ditto]  Looks great! I to remember playing with those old SW toys! In fact I still have some of the old 3 3/4" figures back in storage somewhere at my parents house. I sure do miss those days sometimes. Laugh [(-D]
Some people spend their whole lives wondering if they made a difference. Gundams don't have that problem.

Puma_Adder, Kolshcey, and Boba Fett - - Thanks for the feedback...its much appreciated.

The Wookie Hunter is pretty cool...I love the big guns Smile [:)]  I'm actually considering tackling a Joe Johnston/Ralph McQuarrie AT-AT...I'm currently working on a concept Snowspeeder, and it just doesn't seem right to have one without the other.

It looks really good, I have to say that.  But it also looks... strange.  The head to be to large (or the body to small).   IT lmakes it look slightly disporportioned.

But other then that, outstanding job.  Now get to work, get that Atat driver out and build your own figure for it.

You're not the first to suggest this, but the tricky thing is when you look at this model...

http://www.thelightworks.com/models/model_atst.htm

...the head is much larger in comparison to the body and legs.  I think that most people are familiar with the Empire design as represented by the Kenner toy (which has a smaller head and overscaled feet)...I'm not saying that mine is accurate (because clearly its not), but that the head to body and legs ratio isn't as off as you may think.  That being said, the head is a tad large, since I was working with thick styrene around a two-seater cockpit...I also gave the interior too much headroom so it is indeed a touch top-heavy.

Being a huge Star Wars fan (born in 1970) so I grew up with the original 3 movies staying home from school to see premires and all. I think your model is amazing.I wish I could scratch build like that. Once again great job keep up the good work look forward to more from you.

Hey! Me again. What about an AT-TE from episode 2? Or an AT-PT? Not to barrage you with ideas but then you would have the whole AT-... line. I was just thinking. If you want ref material, go to wookiepedia. Ya might get even more ideas.Whistling [:-^] (sorry)

Some of the prequel designs would be neat to mine for ideas, but at the moment I'm focusing on some of the earlier concept designs of Joe Johnston and Ralph MacQuarrie.  I think it would be neat to see these realized as 3D models, almost like an extension of the Hasbro concept figures.  I may take a look at the conceptual work for the prequels as well...in many respects, the art generated for the films is the best aspect of them.
