Creating cockpit dials in 1/72
Posted by oggy4u on Sunday, March 21, 2010 9:52 AM

Hi,

I  am  working on A models  Yak-15. This instrument panel  has countersunk  dials  and no decals. I have no decals I can scrounge from . Any tips on painting in the dials? Or maybe a source for  instrument panel decals?

Thanks, Alan

In that scale, with that few number of dials, I think you would be better off with white paint and a really thin brush and a steady hand, Like about a 15/0 red sable with most of the bristles gone. Most aviation instruments are just one or two streaks of white on black at that scale anyway, and with what little you can see when the cockpit is closed up, the "suggestion" of instrumentation is often quite effective.

Here's how the cockpit of my 1/72 Academy P-51 Mustang looked after some judicious drybrusing and detailing with said fine point brush - no decals were used - and this is before the rest of the cockpit panels were put on:

Mike Grant sells cockpit decals in 1/72 and 1/48 scale, for both props and jets. The sheets include instrument faces, as well as various placards. They really look great once in place. I used a Waldron punch set to remove the individual gauge faces from the sheet.

They are ALPS-printed, but simply follow Mike's instructions and they will work well with no problems.

Here's a 1/48 P-51A instrument panel that I did with these decals. I used a tiny drop of Future to simulate the glass face of each instrument.

Hope that helps!
