Need Help With Crane Tower Parts
Posted by hunter49 on Tuesday, April 13, 2010 7:42 AM

I plan a crawler crane scratch build soon. Need to know what shapes are on the tower sections. Are they angle irons and tubes. Are the main side members angle irons ?. The interior lacing are they rods?. Please comment.

I supose it all depends on the make and model of crane that you plan to build. I've seen both angle iron and tube frames on boom sections and lacing. But tubing seems to be the norm for larger units

hunter49,

Cool idea for a scratch built project!

I had the pleasure to work on a lift crew that used a Demag CC 8800 crane with a 1375 ton weight! It was brand new and featured counter weights riding above four giant wheels producing virtually zero turn radius for such a huge machine.

On the subject of searches try  Demag, Manitowoc, Liebherr, American, Link-belt, and Terex for brands and search Sterling Crane for a company site.

Hey,hunter 49 . You first need to decide what scale you are going to do this in.If you do it in H.O. you will find lots of EVERGREEN,PLASTRUCT and cornerstone as well as PREISER detail parts that will work to make your job easier. You can also do a lot in p.e. that is used extensively in model ships, planes and cars.Check it out.    Tankerbuilder

Hi; It,s me again! I discovered something this weekend that made me think of you. There is a company that makes structural steel shapes that are unbelievable!! This stuff has got to be made from molds created by a mad scientist. How about this ,box girder  bridges with open web box beams??In H.O. yet! . I was told they do this stuff in "O" guage(approx.1/48 scale)Their name is not available but they are in the WALTHERS railroad catalogue. I hope this helps you some.  tankerbuilder.P.S. They ALL have rivet detail that most armor builders would give a real hoot about !
