Thanks Tankerbuilder,

Most credit goes to the other modelers who contributed to the dio. Mine was just the Ready Room or hut for that matter.

Water is not easy either. I have done my fair share of sea dios and it's no picnic.

Cheers,

Richard

That is PHENOMINAL!!! I would love to do a group project like that! I will agree though, the field could use some more wear and tear, but everything else looks amazing.

Hi Guys,

I got the pictures of the completed airfield from our local website. Here it is:

It was a collective build. Notice the bamboo chick blinds on the ready room? The base and planes were contributed by fellow modellers. I would have preffered more tall grass at the edge of the airfield and tread tracks along the base.

Thanks for looking.

Cheers,

Richard

Thanks Sub, Berny, Kolschey, Railfan and Jetmodeler foir the kind words.

If you notice, there are two sections in the building. One for the briefing room that's covered and the open verandah. Basically there are open windows all round to cope with the heat and the chick blinds to stop rain.

I'll get the picture up as soon as the dio is put together again at this years celebration. The house is in safekeeping with one of the appointed GB handlers.

Looks amazing. It looks like you took one and shrunk it to 48th.Bow DownBow DownBow Down

Incidently my fellow modelling friend say I have this incredible shrinking ray gun stashed away. Lol

 Thanks again for looking.

Cheers,

Richard

If I remember correctly, a ready room is where the pilots are briefed for the missions they go on. Well, at least the ones they know they are going on (if the enemy was attacking, it was jump in your plane, and take-off imidiately and deal with the threats)

It's a good thing I'm not building the ready room for the diorama, because I would have gone and built everything from wood and that palm bark.

I can't wait to see the finished building, with furniture and all

A ready room is a place for pilots to gather for mission briefing and de briefing.  They also hung out there between missions to relax and keep cool during the heat of the day.  Some ready rooms even had a bar so the crews could unwind after a mission.

Very good looking build.  Looks like the first house I bought.   Stick out tongue

padakr

Hi Richard,

Nice looking build. Looks like it will fit right in with the dio.

I believe a "ready room" is the squadron briefing room, where the pilots hold their mission briefings before and after flying.

Paul

Thanks Paul, yes I was told that it was a squadron briefing room. In Alor Setar in '41, the airfield was dotted with huts and a hangar probably made up with zinc sheets and scafolding.

The Japs didn't leave much after they bombed the airfield carefully avoiding the runway and fuel dumps destroying nearly half the squadron. The remaining Buffalos escaped to Kuala Lumpur and then to Singapore that's what I gathered.

Cheers,

Richard

What's a "Ready Room"
Posted by rtfoe on Sunday, July 11, 2010 6:18 AM

Hi All, I've been in this forum for a while and thought I'd share a local scratch build with you.

What's a "Ready Room"? I asked myself the same question when a fellow modeler asked me to scratch build one for a local Malaysian Independence Day GB.

The Project was to do an airfield in Alor Setar Kedah where a Squadron of Brewster Buffalos were stationed during the early hours of the Japanese invasion of Malaya. Everyone else built the planes and airfield and I was tasked to do the "Ready Room". I got some sketches from a friend and to my surprise it was an attap hut on stilts. The following are the sketches of the Ready room and plan of the airfield. The whole project will be in 1/48 scale.

The Ready Room will be in the top left hand corner.

The scratch build begins:

I started off with the stilts made from plastic beams including the stairs.

Then the base was made from mounting board scored to simulate wood floor planking.

Then the frame was measured and cut from balsa and attached with UHU glue.

The roof was supported with card

At this stage I had stained the balsa with brown paint weathered it including the floor.

The walls of the porch were made from strips of coconut bark I got from the garden. It's the stuff that clings to the base of the stem of the palm frond.

The inside got the same treatment. Attap huts only had one side of the walls covered.

Notice the exposed frame.

The next few pictures will show the addition of the zinc roof for the porch made from corrugated card I got from the stationery shop. I painted it and weathered it with light grey and Humbrol Leather which is one of the best hues for rust for me.

The roof also got the same treatment of coconut bark strips to simulate attap.

Next I made the bamboo chicks from type writing paper. I drew the lines with a waterproof ink pen and added the wash colors to create the faded look of the paint.

I added fabricated furniture for the Ready Room using material from wooden tongue depressors.

And I made a chalk board and door from balsa.

These are the pix of the build on the stilts with  1/48 Monogram pilot for scale effect.

I apologise for not having the finished building together with the chick blinds and furniture as I had to rush it to the GB. I hope to get some pictures of it at the event and will post it later.

Thanks for looking. C & C welcomed.

Cheers,

Richard
