it's a 1:1 (full sized) Artoo Detoo astromech. My build plan for this is minimal cost, make as many parts myself and it will be a static model.After purchasing two sheets of 16mm MDF (medium density fibre) particle board and 1x 3mm sheet, i set about finding information from the web. there's a yahoo group dedicated to this subject, so i got their official blueprints as my primary guide. 1. Legs - these are two sheets thick with some extra detailing parts. the feet were a nightmare to shape, and are held on with a single bolt. The body was made from two 48" circles with the 3mm sheet wrapped around it. i secured one end and wetted it and waited for it to sag around the shape. eventually it wrapped all the way around. the head is the hardest part to make. i started with a heap of circles cut from the mdf into a rough dome shape. i then covered it with clay, to shape it and then covered with wall plaster and lots of sanding. i then covered it in fibreglass and resin.here's where i'm at with it. dunno if i'll ever finish it, but it's starting to look like something. there will be lots of work to add all the fine details. at least at 1:1 it's not too small.

Interesting. I've never seen a model of R2D2, never mind a 1/1 scale model. I'm not the biggest Star Wars fan, but I'm enough of one to want to see the final product.
3/4" particle board. Who would have thought that could be used for more than a diorama base?

Nice work but and astromech body is only 18" dia.
I've worked on one made from a mold off a screen use droid and have the head of an R4 sitting near by.
You might want to look into the R2 builders clubs if you haven't already.

There are a few vinyl kits available, a 1/6 MPC model, and lots of 'toys' too that are quite accurate.
Mabe I out to look into some of those kits, just for fun
small update. the shoulder pivot is made from a lid off the Colonel's finest potato + gravy combined with a small 'cup', which has 'Solo' branding on it. i found a pair of each so both sides could be made. The two leg inserts are small dc motors scavenged out of a couple CDROM drives. getting four the same was the real trick. (these motors open/close the tray)
looking good so far! this is on my to do list now! not sure i'f i'll go 1:1 though! if i do, i'll make a fridge out of it!
Thare's an idea. make a 1/1 scale R2D2, and add the RC and robotics to make it to where it could travel on it's own, and put a small fridge apparatus into it. Fill it with your favorite snacks, and you are ready to go.
