Posted by Templar on Wednesday, July 21, 2010 4:13 PM

Greetings;

I am scratch building a 32/mm siege tower.Rope will be used to raise the wooden bridge.Can you please advise as to how to get the rope (model ship rigging ) to act realisticly.I can't get the bends to straiten out enough to look and act the way real rope would.Thanks

Best Regards

If you're using cotton fiber rigging thread, try wetting it to straighten it out.

When I've had that kind of trouble I've wet the rope after rigging and held tension on it til dry. It dried in proper shape.

Templar,

Hit the local sewing shop for scale 'rope' IE thread in the color you need. Some run it over wax to eliminate 'fuz & stray strands. I assume you need 'hemp' rope and a light tan thread will work well, allow the weight of the draw bridge to pull it tight after securing it well. I suggest drilling a hole & tying if that is how the real one was attached.

Good luck & post some pic's as its a unusual modeling subject in these forums.

Here's a way to make rope that will stay in whatever position you shape it into. You will need some thin copper wire from a stripped down pc. of 18 gauge electrical wire, some soldering equipment, a drill and an eye bolt.

Pic 1 - take three strands of wire and anchor to a nail or vise at one end, make a loop in the other end.

Pic 2 - place the eyebolt in the drill chuck and tighten. Hook the loose end of the wire in the eye and run the drill until your wire is coiled enough to look like rope.

Pic 3 - Flux the wire and run a beed of solder onto the rope. Paint and shape to your needs

This also makes excellent tow cable for tanks, just cut off the plastic connectors on the kit cable and glue onto the ends of the wire.t.
