1910 flyer 50's rebuild - Art Hartman
Posted by hawkeye2an_L-Bird_fan on Tuesday, August 17, 2010 11:10 AM

For those of you counting this is number 5 in my series of 6 aircraft flown by local Early Aviator Art Hartman. The original version of this aircraft was built by Art in 1910 and he is credited with being the first Iowan to take flight in a heavier-than-air craft in the state of Iowa, flying from the Burlington golf course on May 10,1910. Art rebuilt the plane in the 50s using steel tubes and a three cylinder Szekely engine. He barnstormed it throughout the midwest. One of the reasons it has such large tires is that Art would remove the wings and tow the airplane to local airshows and then assemble it at the airfield.

The framework was built from styrene rod. The only items that weren't built from scratch are the wings, they were cut from a Jenny wing. Rigging is 2# test fishing line.
