Offy engine project
Posted by Don Stauffer on Thursday, August 26, 2010 9:17 AM

Have started a new engine project.  This is a model of a 270 c.i. Offenhauser race car engine.

This is, of course, not an operating model.  In fact, it is what we called when I was a kid, a solid model.

The picture shows the crankcase to the left, with the integral block/head unit next to it. On the right is the flywheel part of the crankcase, a seperate casting on the prototype.  The small piece at the bottom, from basswood, as the front crankcase cover that covers part of the gear train.

The model is in 1:6 scale. I had previously done a 110 ci Offy midget engine, in 1:4 scale. It was easier to do the big Offy in 1:6 so the drawings would fit on 8.5 x 11 paper :-)
