mostly scratch.. ' model 1866 ' Gatling gun
Posted by treadwell on Saturday, October 30, 2010 6:29 PM

Hi guys,

It's been about a year since I last visited....thought I would share a work in progress.

These are pictures of my 1/16 'model 1866 ' gatling gun, 6 barrel, of 1" caliber. At the time it was built, it was considered an artillery piece.

Much of the model is from scratch,as you can see, and the pieces not scratched are re-built, such as the wheel hubs made from Apoxie Sculpt and .058 strip styrene banding.

The wheel spokes, rims and carriage side pieces are from model expo ' Napoleon 12 pounder gun carriage'.

The main frame was carved from 2 pieces of laminated hardwood (white oak), some mahogany, lead, sheet plastic and brass.

I laminated the 2 pieces of wood together so I would have a built in 'center line' to measure from.

The folding brass piece centrally located on the chassis is the gunners seat (I have scribed 'wood grain' on it so when painted will look correct.)

The gun is scratched from aluminum, brass and parts I cast to make the barrel holders and bearings that supports the mainshaft allowing the barrel to rotate..

The main tube of the gun, shell hopper and end cap are fashioned from .010 sheet styrene, with the end cap ball being from a dressmakers pin ( thanks honey)

The end cap ball was also molded on with Apoxie Sculpt. Other adetails fashioned from styrene stock, rod and tube.

The baseball bat looking handle was turned from an ex-chopstick and is used by the crew to orient the chassis left to right.

The 3rd to last picture (lithograph) has been one of my main resorces to build the actual 'gatling gun' which is riding in a modified Napoleon gun chassis which was used in many

various forms to carry a variety of armorment from about 1812 through the U.S. civil war and beyond.

I am still making scale ammo and many other parts such as the gun trunion holding caps, wheel end caps, replacing the cank handle. and or course planning the paint job.

I consider the model about 65% finished.

Thanks for your time, william carls      aka  treadwell
