Civilian Sherman Conversion, logging winch tower

Back in 97' traveled to the Yukon, stopped Kitimat, Northern B.C.

Found this Sherman that was converted to anchor a winch tower used for steep angle logging. The picture quality is poor as its a picture of a panoramic photograph that itself was poor. I regret not taking several angles yet the basic concept is visible in the pictures.

Pictured is Ty Bud & Sprout (Wild Bill)

Hope this inspires some serious scratch building, would make for a cool vignette or diorama.

I checked out your site, tried to comment on it yet I have no Google, Twitter or other account to start one on your site.

Wanted to say excellent model building going on & looking forward to stopping in again.

Back in 97' I had not returned to the hobby of model building, if I had there would be a LOT more DETAILED photographs of the converted Sherman tank.

Being a unique conversion a modeler can take assumptions on the assembly. Its basically a large post like on a ski lift with winches to hoist, winches to use as a live load line and anchor cables. There is large hydrolic reservoirs indicating hydrolics power the winches and may aid in hoisting the tower. Further examination hint a separate motor mounted to power said hydrolics, most likely in the large box or 'house' where the turret would roughly of been. Also the very large anchor plow or spade on the rear.

If anyone is wanting to take a crack at building this, I can get photos and measurements as we have one of these parked as it is no longer in use. We call them mini-towers as they are usually 60-70' pipes where the usual towers are 90'. They are mounted on an M-36 chassis. Another Sherman conversion we have is a tank drill which is based on an M-40 chassis. These are used to drill rock to build our roads for harvesting. Drop me a line if I can help you out.

Saw a similar one on a Sherman ARV chasis on the TV Show "Ax-Men".. At any rate, I thought the entire concept of the show stupid for "The History Channel", same as "Ice-Road Truckers"... Seemed to me to make more sense were it shown on "The Discovery Channel", and history was shown on "The History Channel"... However, I digress..

Thought it was called a "Yarder" on that show....
